CVS is offering a virtually free PayAnywhere credit card reader thru May 2 (pay $9.99, get $9.99 Extra Bucks store credit).
(Is this sort of thing of any interest? If so I'll add similar offers.)

I think both Square and PayPal still offer free credit card readers.

Home Depot has CFL bulbs at 4/$.97 - really cheap high-voltage circuitry.

Many groceries and pharmacies are offering flu shots free with insurance. Harris Teeter even gives you a $5 store credit!

Best advice ever.  Get your flu shot this and every year.  2-3 days of feeling a little icky saves you 1-3 weeks of being incapacitated with the flu.  People come to the ER all the time with the flu thinking they are dying - some actually are.  The anti-viral they can give you within the first 48 hours of showing symptoms can save you about a day of suffering - which doesn't seem like a lot but anything is better than nothing if you get it.  Please add to what I've provided here.

20 things to note:
1. Even after getting a flu shot, it takes a week or two to get the immunity - your body needs time to make the proteins
2. You CANNOT get the flu from a normal flu shot - all the flu virus in it is dead
3. People 65 and older require a HIGH-DOSE to make their bodies trigger a stronger immune response (Fluzone High-Dose)
4. There is a preservative free version for people who are allergic to the preservatives used in the normal serum.  Only recommended for people up to 49yo as older than that needs a higher-dose version that can't be done without using eggs.
5. There is a live, nasal flu spray which CAN and DOES give you the flu so you can fight it off and get the anti-bodies (my personal opinion is this is a last ditch effort when for whatever reason you can't get the regular or preservative free version in shot form)
6. The shot itself is done with the smallest needle possible and doesn't hurt a bit.  There is only some soreness the day after where the body is beginning to fight off the dead protein coat
7. Flu season is October through April
8. Even without insurance, the shot runs $15 - $30 at most - almost any pharmacy, including those in Costco, Safeway, Giant, CVS, Rite Aid ($26.99), Shoppers, Food Lion, Bloom (converting to Food Lion around here), Walmart ($25), BJs, Target ($24.99 reg or preservative free, $31.99 for quadrivalent - 4 strains) and many others can give you the vaccine without advance notice, just show up)
9. Get it on a Thursday and spend a weekend in relaxing, sleeping in.  By Monday you'll be back to happy and ready to go.  Pick a time and do it the same time every year - just like putting batteries in the smoke alarm.  I do mine in September yearly.
10. There are no toxins in the flu shot - it contains a small amount of thimerosal as a preservative and a small amount of formaldehyde (about 100x less than in a pear or shiitake mushroom) to kill the flu virus
11. Pregnant women can and should get their flu shot - it will help the developing child's immune system and reduce the risk of several birth complications including miscarriages, preterm birth (<40 wks), underweight babies, etc.
12. Flu vaccines help make it harder to catch other more severe infectious diseases such as pneumonia (which is frequently caused after being compromised by the flu)
13. Children can and should get the flu shot since they are exposed more than any other age group
14. Getting the flu can cause other more severe problems such as the autoimmune nerve disorder Guillain Barre syndrome
15. People, even healthy people die from the flu every year.  I wouldn't bother writing this if I didn't want to stop that from happening.
16. Antibiotics do nothing for the flu - it is a virus
17. Even the flu shot can't guarantee you won't get the flu.  A small percentage of the population can't make the protein fully to guarantee protection.  Even if you do get the flu after a flu shot it has been shown to make it last a lot shorter time period and be less severe.
18. If you have any of these and haven't had a flu shot, take thyself today to get it: people with heart disease, diabetes, lung disease, kidney problems or with a weakened immune system, caregivers or those who have household contact with children less than six months old
19. Many employers offer flu shots at reduced or no cost - they usually wait too long to start so don't be shy about getting it toward the end of September all by yourself.
20. All the cool kids are doing it ;-)

If anyone dreams up any other bizarre, unexplainable reasons for not getting the flu shot, please let me know.  I've been debunking these "commonly known" facts for years.  I'm also happy to provide CDC and other links to support every thing I've said here.  Likewise, ask the pharmacist you trust most or your own doctor.  They will also confirm what I've said and offer to help allay any other fears you might have about the flu shot, as well as giving it to you.

What you get with the flu:
- Severe joint and muscular pain
- Weakness, fatigue, and malaise
- Headache
- Sore throat and runny nose
- Warm, flushed skin and red, watery eyes (sometimes with pain around the eyes)
- Dry, non-productive cough
- POSSIBLE AND LIFE THREATENING:
     * Confusion
     * Pain or pressure in the chest or belly
     * Trouble breathing or shortness of breath
     * Sudden dizziness
     * Severe vomiting

Other, more financial and immediate benefits:
- CVS gives you a 20% off shopping pass the day you get the shot
- Harris Teeter gives you a $5 store credit (as pointed out originally)
- Safeway gives you a 10% off on groceries coupon
- Giant makes a donation to the local YMCA and gives you a coupon book with $44 dollars worth of coupons inside
- Rite Aid is giving $5 off on flu shots from Nov. 29 through Dec. 12 ($26.99 after discount)

Any others you know about I've missed?

P.S. If you're over 50, have heart or lung diseases, there's also a pneumonia vaccine you should consider getting.  There is now a one time and done version - no more every 5 years.  If you've never had pneumonia, I REALLY don't recommend it.  Many more people die from that than the flu each year.  The flu weakens you enough that pneumonia is a real risk.

If you're on immunosuppressants it's a crapshoot whether the flu vaccine will work on you but you definitely should not be getting the live version (nasal spray).

KMart has the Brinkman Qbeam rechargeable spotlight on sale for $19.79. This is not your ordinary portable spotlight:
LED light
682 lumens - about equivalent to a 60W incandescent (but directional of course)
Runs 7 hours on 302 lumen setting
Li-ion battery rather than the usual lead-acid or NiCad
It also has "night vision" 36 lumen red LEDs (not sure if that's actually useful for anything).
