Purple Martins are remarkably agile birds, providing relentless aerial
insect-control services and entertainment. Some were determined to build
a mud nest adhered to flat boards around my house. Eventually, one of
these nests remained attached long enough for hatchlings to emerge,
though it was also structurally unsound, and began to detach. Stapling
up some carefully folded wire mesh allowed the nest to remain in place
indefinitely. Of course, some purpose-built wood boxes an materials were
on hand as a backup plan, but this was a simpler hack that preserved the
existing nest.

Over the next few weeks, all four healthy birds successfully fledged. By
now, they have left for South America, if not there already. Good luck!
