PET HEALTH WEEKLY NEWSLETTER
A woman and her dog atop a mountain trail.
There’s nothing better than spending time outdoors with your best friend. Hiking offers exercise, bonding, and sensory enrichment for both you and your dog. Here are 10 smart steps to take before you hit the trail:

🐾 Check with your veterinarian to confirm your dog is healthy enough to hike. It's a good idea to know where the nearest emergency vet is, just in case.
🐾 Stay current on vaccines and flea, tick, and heartworm preventives.
🐾 Pick a dog-friendly trail. Use AllTrails.com to filter for dog-allowed hikes and check for any restrictions.
🐾 Keep your dog on a leash. It helps prevent run-ins with wildlife, toxic plants, or other hikers.
🐾 Update ID tags and microchip info in case your dog gets lost.
🐾 Start easy. Choose a short loop trail with minimal incline if your dog is new to hiking.
🐾 Bring plenty of water and snacks for you both, plus a collapsible bowl for your dog.
🐾 Skip the streams. Natural water may look clean but can contain harmful bacteria and parasites.
🐾 Bring poop bags and clean up after your dog. If there’s no trash can, be prepared to carry it out. Many trails follow a “pack it in, pack it out” rule.
🐾 Do a post-hike check for ticks, burrs, or injuries, and know where the nearest emergency vet is located.

With a little preparation, you and your dog can enjoy a safe, rewarding adventure on the trails. Happy hiking!

Upcoming Pet Memorial Event

8th Annual Celebration of Life

We warmly invite you to our 8th Annual Celebration of Life, a time to come together to remember the pets we’ve lost and the lives we shared. Join us as we honor our beloved animal companions, find comfort in community, and hear from author Victoria Schade. Jamie Cohen, AMC's full-time licensed clinical social worker (LCSW), will also share words of reflection.

The program will include a Candle Lighting Ceremony. If you would like to participate, please have a candle ready. We will conclude with our Pet Memorial Slideshow. Photo submissions for our Pet Memorial Slideshow will close at 5PM on Wednesday, August 27th.

This is a free, online-only event hosted via Zoom. The Zoom link will be emailed to all registered participants the day of the event. Please email UsdanIn...@amcny.org with any questions.

Understanding Your Pet’s Body Language

A gray cat tilting its head to the side.
Since animals have a limited verbal repertoire, body language is their primary means of communication. In this week's blog Dr. Ann Hohenhaus explains the many ways our pets express their needs and emotions.

AMC at Summer Streets

A collage of many dogs who stopped by our table at Summer Streets.
We had a great time at NYC’s Summer Streets last weekend! Thanks to everyone who stopped by the Usdan Institute table to say hello and pick up some educational materials. We loved meeting all the adorable pups — and chatting with their humans.

Meet Petey and Waffles!

Two dogs: Petey and Waffles.
This week, we’re spotlighting two special pups from Summer Streets: AMC patients Petey and Waffles! Petey (left) is a patient of Dr. Palma, and Waffles sees Dr. Roswell. Their families stopped by our table to share how much they love AMC — and we love them right back! ❤️

If you would like to have your best friend featured in our newsletter, social media platforms, or website, please email us at UsdanIn...@amcny.organd include your pet's name, age, photo, and a brief message!
