Hello members and friends,

Melanie Brunson, chair of the GDUI advocacy committee has given me permission to share her report concerning the Center of Disease Control (CDC) importation of dogs entering the United States that will begin on August 1, 2024.

“Hi all, I have just learned that the U.S. Centers for Disease Control (CDC) has made a change to their requirements for travelers bringing dogs into the U.S. from other countries.  The good news is that if the dog has been in a country that the CDC thinks is either Rabies-free, or at low risk for the disease, there is a simplified form that must be completed.  This form need not be submitted in advance, and can be filled out online as late as the day the traveler arrives in the U.S.  However, there is still a form that must be completed, and I have received one report from a gDUI member indicating that it isn't as accessible as it could be.  She said that Jaws did not read all of the edit boxes so it wasn't always possible to tell what information was being requested.  Those of you who are interested may want to take a look at the form on the CDC website and see what you can do with it.  In the meantime, the requirements for testing and more detailed info appear to still be in place for travelers coming to the U.S. with dogs from those countries on CDC's list of high-risk countries.  That list is available at cdc.gov/importation/dogs/index.html.  I'll keep an ear to the ground for any further developments on this issue, as apparently, CDC has made these changes in response to lots of public pressure from dog show organizations and the government of Canada, and apparently, Canada isn't quite satisfied yet.  Perhaps, we can join with them and add some pressure of our own once we get some accessibility feedback about the form?  I'll put this on our agenda for next week's meeting.

All for now.  Thanks for reading.

Melanie”
