PET HEALTH WEEKLY NEWSLETTER
Pet Fire Safety. Each year in the U.S., nearly a thousand house fires are started by pets. The most common piece of equipment involved is the stove, which becomes a hazard when counter-surfing dogs and curious cats nudge knobs and ignite burners. Reduce the risk by removing knobs when you go out or installing inexpensive safety covers.
Pet Fire Safety Day is on July 15th this year, which is a good reminder to include your pets in your family emergency plan. Every year in the U.S., about 40,000 pets die in fires with more than 500,000 pets affected overall. Be sure to schedule fire drills to practice evacuating with your pet. Upcoming Online Event!

Cushing's Disease in Pets infographic with headshot of Dr. Dennis Slade and photo of dog with Cushing's Disease.
Pets with Cushing's Disease, also known as hyperadrenocorticism, may experience a range of health issues due to the excessive production of cortisol — a hormone essential for stress response and metabolic regulation. Join us on Wednesday, July 17th at 6PM ET as Dr. Dennis Slade, Specialist in Internal Medicine at AMC, discusses the major forms of Cushing's Disease in dogs and cats. While the variety of clinical signs can make diagnosing this disorder a challenge, with proper treatment and monitoring, pets can maintain a good quality of life.

This is a free, online-only event hosted via Zoom. The Zoom link will be emailed to all registered participants the day of the event. Please email UsdanIn...@amcny.org with any questions.

What Pet Owners Should Know About C-Sections

A newborn puppy.
The Caesarean section, often referred to as a C-section, is a surgery performed when offspring are delivered through an abdominal incision rather than through the birth canal. While C-sections are common in human medicine, veterinarians will also deliver puppies, kittens, calves, lambs, and the occasional bird or turtle via a C-section surgery. To learn more about Caesarean sections in pets and when they are needed, check out our blog at the link below.
