PET HEALTH WEEKLY NEWSLETTER

Apoquel medication news alert graphic.

🚨 Apoquel® is a prescription allergy medication for dogs. The chewable tablets are pork-liver flavored — making them easier to give to dogs but dangerously tempting to cats. 🐱

If cats accidentally ingest a dog’s chewable Apoquel tablets, it can cause severe, potentially fatal illness. Reported complications include acute kidney injury (AKI), heart rhythm disturbances, neurologic signs such as weakness or dullness, and liver injury.

NC State Veterinary Hospital has documented cases of cats becoming critically ill after ingesting chewable Apoquel prescribed for dogs, and similar cases have been reported at other veterinary hospitals. Poison control centers have also noted a sharp rise in exposures since the release of the flavored chewable form. While some cats have recovered, outcomes are unpredictable, and larger ingestions can be fatal.

👉 Store all medications in a locked cabinet, out of reach of pets.

👉 Ask your veterinarian if the non-chewable, unflavored form of Apoquel may be a safer option if you have both cats and dogs at home.

👉 Seek veterinary care immediately if your cat gets into your dog’s Apoquel.
