Join the Golden State Guide Dog Handlers on Saturday, April 26 at 6:00 PM PDT, for an important presentation about emergency preparedness with your guide dog or pet. Melissa Smith, Guiding Eyes west coast field representative, will speak to us about preparing for an evacuation, what to include in your to-go bag for your dog, and food storage. Melissa Smith has been in the Guide Dog field since she was a teen. She became involved in her local 4H Guide Dog puppy raising program at the age of 14 and continued to raise 8 pups before beginning her career at Guide Dogs for the Blind in San Rafael, CA. She spent 15 years there working her way through a 3 year apprenticeship program and then on to becoming a Master Licensed Instructor. Training Guide Dogs is incredibly physical so she ended her career and spent several years working in private and group dog training, including obedience, agility, therapy dog and behavior modification. She spent time learning more about holistic nutrition and supplementation for companion animals. During that time she raised 4 more puppies for Guiding Eyes for the Blind in Yorktown Heights, NY. This led to her new and current role as a Regional Guide Dog Mobility Instructor. Melissa has been with GEB now for 8 years and manages close to 120 guide dog teams in the western states. She supports these teams to keep them safely working together as long as possible. She also assesses new applicants and trains new students who choose to learn in their home area rather than going to NY.

Melissa manages a small group of GEB puppy raisers in the state of Colorado and shows her personal dogs in her spare time.
