My school recently bought the new Hymnsoft site license. When I installed

it, it required me to install Quicktime. I read the other day that

Apple is discontinuing support for Quicktime for Windows and all Windows

users should uninstall it immediately because of two major security issues.

Any ideas on how to use HS without putting security at risk? I have contacted NPH but have not heard of a solution from them yet.

Thanks,

Ryan Rosenthal

Have you read this from Apple?

We use HymnSoft regularly for the church services and have for a few years now.

Apple does not want to fix the current outstanding QuickTime security flaws, so their solution is to simply uninstall QuickTime … period.

I had reported this situation to HymnSoft Support (Carl Nolte) last week. In his response, he stated he had contacted the programmer and was waiting to hear back from him.

For the time being, we do not have the Windows PC that runs HymnSoft physically connected to the network at all. So it still has QuickTime installed on it so we can use HymnSoft.

Here are some additional comments and suggestions that Carl Nolte included in his email response to me:

As you suggest, you could keep QT on the computer and install HymnSoft, but then make sure you do not have any files from the Internet that would play on QT. My understanding is that the potential hacking would only happen if you download a corrupted file and then play it with QT.

The other possibility is to bypass HymnSoft and use the embedded MIDI files in iTunes or Windows Media Player and create your own playlists for the service.

They are found at this location:

Computer > OS (C:) > ProgramData > HymnSoft Files > Music

In the three folders for CW, CWOS, and CWS, are all of the segments for playing the music. Note that the psalm folder has a "full" version which has the psalm timed out for the complete psalm. That might be a lot easier than using the parts and then having to click between them.

You would have to stop the playlist at the end of a hymn, psalm, or liturgy song, because it usually keeps on playing the next item.

We will try to let everyone know as soon as possible about the QT issue.

Blessings,

Dennis Schendel
