Tell us a little more
Please tell us about your plans for your school garden program.
Sagamore Hills Elementary has started to implement and utilize the garden space that has been available its courtyard for several years. There are planting beds, an old greenhouse and seating. The program has both a classroom focus and a specific garden club. Classes and the club plant their own beds with the help of a master gardener. The plans for the garden are to increase children's awareness of healthy food production, from garden to table, and for students to explore the science of the plants that we grow.
Describe how the garden will be used to teach sustainable gardening practices.
The garden will teach sustainability through all it does starting with recycling. The garden has recycled decorations using old tires, cans and found objects. The kids will recycle by harvesting seeds from existing plants to sow next year. The planters used are biodegradable cardboard egg cartons and cardboard rolls brought in by students and families. Water conservation is taught through use of rain barrels. We are also taking space, an old courtyard, and reusing it as well, making it beautiful and useful.
Describe how the garden will be used to teach healthy eating habits.
The garden will be used to teach healthy eating habits. By teaching the students to plant and grow things, there will a gained appreciation for food from a garden. The garden club will harvest what is grown and eat it together. This may be the first time these students have actually seen where food comes from and how it can be harvested and eaten. The nutritional aspect of specific plants will be given in a lessons. We will explore the school's Farm to School program. We will teach why eating healthy is so good.
How will your funds will be used?
The funds will be used to sustain and grow our current program:
- Providing tools and gloves-$200
- Greenhouse maintenance to be fully operational-$300
- Build a worm compost bins and supply worms-$300
- Install new raised beds and plants-$500
- Purchase educational material about healthy eating-$200

Hi Shannon,

That is great! There might be other small grant opportunities. I'll see what I can find. Are there specific things that you would like to fund?
