Greetings Everyone,

Thanks again for the wonderful gift card from the Garden Club! I just wanted to let you know that I will be meeting with a project manager from Captain Planet and Food Corps to develop a maintenance schedule for the garden at Sagamore Hills tomorrow afternoon around 2:30p. If you're interested in working with us, please feel free to join us. We will be coming up with a harvest and food distribution schedule as well.

Also, as community stakeholders and supporters of STEM++ education, I would be thrilled to have you join me for my 2nd QTR Investor's VIP Brunch. My organization just got acquired by a new tech company that will be launching an Atlanta operation within the next few months. I will be presenting a new non-profit product fundraising program for schools, youth and community groups I created for the company. Hopefully, funds will be raised so I can better support the planned activities we have for next year's garden club.

Hope you can make it....and thanks again for such a fantastic garden club experience this year! I truly enjoyed working with Ms. Quinn and your kids.

They were awesome!!!

Greetings Suzie,

Hope your Summer has been enjoyable as well.  I just had my first official Atwood @ Kittredge Park Garden Club meeting today.  We agreed to partner with Yad L Yad -- a food services non-profit that harvests and delivers kosher and organic foods to needy families within the Metro Atlanta community.  This would ensure that I have help maintaining all three  garden sites (Sagamore, DeKalb International and Kittredge Park) throughout the year and that the food grown would not go to waste.

Although their focus is on serving Jewish families, I have asked if families of other faiths could be served through their system.  If not, then I will ask Fred Conrad of the Atlanta Community Food Bank to connect me with a similar organization to ensure we help as many families as possible regardless of their religious beliefs.

Would you be okay with having this group maintaining and harvesting Sagamore's garden with me?  I will provide a maintenance plan and harvesting schedule for us to follow so everyone will know when to expect us on site.

Please advise.

I hope everyone is enjoying the Summer.  I just wanted to remind you to stop by and let the children harvest some of the lettuces and kale that is growing in our garden. It won't be good much longer, but I picked some last week for our salads and it was delicious.   Hopefully we'll be harvesting peppers, beans, squash and tomatoes in another month.

Enjoy!

Thanks Dave!

Just a quick update. I met with Sarah Dasher, our Food Corps/Captain Planet garden coordinator yesterday and we agreed to meet on Monday mornings @ 9a to start cleaning up and maintaining the garden.

If anyone is interested (and would like to start sooner before the sun comes out, please let me know if that day and time works for you.

We will harvest while  there so if you would like to take food to families that would enjoy the harvests, please let us know. We will bag it for you to take to them.
Otherwise, I will take them to the Atwood Garden Club @ Kittredge Park for distribution.

Hope to see you on Monday!

Greetings Everyone,

Sagamore's STEM Garden Club will be hosting out-of-state volunteers from Student Mission on July 14 & 15.  I need two Volunteer Leaders to help oversee the groups' activities during their visit and offer the best Southern hospitality to boot. This is a family event so please feel free to bring the kids!

The volunteers will be helping with the following tasks (pending Ms. Quinn's approval):

  • Mulching walkways Pulling all of the grass and weeds from around the beds down to the roots and then mulching all walkways with 2ft paths around each bed (mulch provided)
  • Weeded beds Pulling all of the weeds from the beds; planting available crops/seeds; and placing identifying markers for beds (by grade); watering
  • Bed Content Identification There is a hodge-podge of stuff growing in each bed. We'd like to identify what's currently growing in the beds to document our growing cycles and activities.
  • Pumpkin patch Principal Taylor wants a pumpkin patch! Designate the underutilized growing areas near the cafeteria hallway to grow pumpkins OR the brush area where the wild berries are growing to establish the pumpkin patch.
  • Master garden design Developing a master garden design that would identify the growing products in each bed around the entire school. This will allow the garden club to work off a global growing and maintenance calendar and create a shared STEM++ lessons/activities of the global STEM++/nature-based curricula
  • Harvest Hopefully, we will have enough of a harvest to share with our visiting guests to thank them for their service.
I will ask our resident landscaper, Mr. Mark Aylor, to come by and assess the best places to put the pumpkin patch so our volunteers will have better instructions on what to do.

Please let me know if you can help out during this event.
