Announcement about Elchenburg Castle

Unto the populace of the Kingdom of Atlantia, greetings from Maistir Cian, Kingdom Seneschal.
Effective June 18, 2025, the SCA Board of Directors has directed the Kingdom of Atlantia to not use Elchenburg Castle as an event site until further notice.
The BoD has serious concerns regarding safety and liability, stemming from the incident that occurred last year at Sacred Stone Baronial Birthday. I have been involved in many conference calls with Society Leadership to discuss those concerns and report on progress made by the site owners to make the site better and safer. Unfortunately, the hard decision was made by the BoD to have us stop using the site immediately.
Earlier this week, there was a conference call with Society Leadership with Their Majesties, Their Highnesses, and myself to discuss the prohibition on using the site and potential paths forward for Elchenburg to be in use again.
I have spoken with the event stewards of Sacred Stone Baronial Birthday and War of the Wings about moving the events. War of the Wings is being moved to Van Hoy Campground in Statesville, NC about 40 miles from Elchenburg Castle. SSBB does not have a new site yet, but I was able to provide them with an extensive list of potential sites in the area that was collected by the hard work of Duchess Simone and Sir Aelfred.
Please be patient with the staff of both events as they make this necessary change.
I also had a phone call with the site owners of Elchenburg Castle about the situation. They were very understanding and are already working toward being able to satisfy SCA requirements for us to be able to use the site again.
I am truly sorry to have to make this announcement. I know this is difficult for many to hear, as we have a long history with Elchenburg Castle.
