SEPTEMBER HAPPENINGS

Hi garden friends, we've got an exciting month full of arts and theater performances! If you're interested in proposing your own event or becoming a garden member, just send me an email and we can chat!

Garden workdays
  • Sunday Sept 7 12pm
  • Sunday Sept 21 12pm
Garden workdays are open time for anyone to drop by and volunteer in the garden, no experience needed. Tasks include pruning, weeding, sweeping, composting, and repairs.

Urban ecology reading group
  • Sunday Sept 21 3pm-5pm
Be part of a learning community on all things urban ecology! Bring your own reading material pertaining to the multi-species communities we’re part of, including topics such as gardening/horticulture, urban planning, soil management, the philosophy of science, history, anthropology, mycology, climate change, and birding. All genres welcome, including fiction. One hour of quiet reading time, 15 minutes reserved for optional open mic presentations, and the remaining time for free chatting and discussion.

An immersive theater event juxtaposing performance with garden maintenance. Through Njinksy's choreography, poetic and scientific botanical texts, actualized horticultural labor, as well as live accompaniment, the audience is transported into a living sculpture garden.

Harvest Arts Festival

An annual multi-day celebration of art, music, poetry, puppets, workshops, theater, opera, dance, spoken word, drag performances and fun!

Finally, a creature spotlight: leafcutter bees!
If you see a perfectly circular hole in a leaf, like it's been hole-punched, a likely culprit is the leafcutter bee. Leafcutter bees cut these circles to line their nests, which are usually in hollow plant stems or holes abandoned by wood-boring insects. While honeybees are well-known for their colonies and hives, most bees native to North America, such as the leafcutter bee, are solitary. About 30% of these bees live in holes in logs or reeds, while 70% live underground. These bees are cool and important pollinators!
