Dear all,

I'm new to Globus and I'm trying to receive files from a collaborator. To do so I have set up a personal endpoint but the person at the other end says he couldn't access the endpoint. However, following the tutorial (https://docs.globus.org/guides/tutorials/manage-files/transfer-files/) I was able to download (and upload) files from this endpoint. I'm not sure what might be the issue. Is it that I'm not a member of the subscribed group? But my institute (Emory) has a subscription (though I'm not sure who is the manager), also it seems like students and researchers can still share files, even if there was an issue with subscription? Not sure.
Any insight would be helpful.

Thanks,
Abhi

Hi Ian,

Thanks. Are you referring to this site (?): https://docs.globus.org/guides/tutorials/manage-files/share-files/

However, I'm getting this error message (are we suppose to get that)

Hi Abhi,

Did you also follow the link regarding "Learn about sharing data."

You have to give the other person permission to access your collection.

Without a subscription, Globus Connect Personal endpoints can only share (for other people) to and from Globus Connect Server endpoints.

"To transfer between two Globus Connect Personal (GCP) endpoints, one of the users must create a share hosted on their GCP endpoint, then grant the other user(s) access to that share. Any user that has access to that share (via an individual permission or group permission ACL) can transfer between it and their GCP endpoint. To create a share, the GCP endpoint needs to be created by a user who is in a Globus Plus group, or it has to be an actual managed endpoint, set by a subscription manager. Your account may be upgraded to Globus Plus if your institution subscribes to a Globus subscription."

Hope this helps,
Alan

Hi Abhi,

As others already pointed out, in order to be able to share (== create guest collections), the  underlying endpoint must be tagged with a subscription.  This applies both to big multi-user Globus Connect Server instances and to individual Globus Connect Personal instances, like yours.

So your options are either of:
  1. Make your personal endpoint subscribed, then you will be able to create a share and your collaborators would then "push" to you (the way you intended)
  2. If the collaborator has a subscription on their side, there's always a reverse option: ask them to create a share - and then "pull" from them.

To get added to the Emory subscription group, you can go to Settings -> Subscriptions in the Globus webapp (https://app.globus.org/settings/subscriptions), and use the "Find a Subscription" button to search for Emory.  This would bring up the Emory subscription group page (https://app.globus.org/groups/1a7cac68-d0d9-11ee-9efb-555057841af0/about) where you could request to join, and Emory subscription managers would be notified.

Note also that if your end goal is to transfer data to an HPC cluster or some centralized storage, chances are that filesystem may already have a subscribed endpoint - so you may be able to skip the "download to my PC" step and create your share right there. I have followed up in your ticket with some more details.
