Summer 2026 - Session B
ENGL 106A - Playwriting Workshop
This course offers an exploration of the essential components of the writing of a ten-minute play for the stage, with a special focus on testimonial theater and related genres. Students will conduct oral histories of Isla Vista and “Old Town” Goleta’s diverse residents to craft 10-minute plays that delve into the often-overlooked lives of this small central coast city’s residents, which include Latinx working-class, precarious houseless segments of the community, small business owners, and long-time residents of all backgrounds. The class aims to highlight the significant role Latinx and people of all backgrounds play in managing the town's restaurants, stores, and infrastructure in addition to UCSB’s vast operations such as residence halls, facilities, and grounds. Thus, in addition to exploring the essential components of playwriting, such as structure, dialogue, and character, students will gain an understanding of Latinx theater history and oral methodologies, and the principles of community-based organizing. The course will conclude with a staged reading for the greater Isla Vista and Goleta populations. Attendance at all class sessions and community performances is mandatory.
