Dear Students,

Open spots available in LING 62: Academic Writing in Humanities and Social Sciences this Spring! Meets Mondays & Wednesdays from 11am-12:15pm.

• Now satisfies GE Special Subject Area - Writing!

This course teaches the practical skills behind clear, professional academic communication — not just how to write, but how to structure arguments, present data, and produce polished documents using real tools. Taught by a data scientist, it takes a structured, systematic approach to academic writing as a learnable craft. Topics include:

- Brainstorming and planning techniques for developing and testing ideas
- Crafting effective narratives and structuring arguments for different audiences
- Structuring academic texts: papers, abstracts, proposals, posters, and peer reviews
- Presenting data clearly using tables and figures
- Professional document typesetting with modern tools (beyond Word)
- Citation and bibliography management
- Responsible use of AI in academic writing

 

Open to all majors. Especially useful for students in linguistics, social sciences, or any other discipline where clear, structured communication matters. A solid foundation for students considering graduate school or research careers in any field.
