Leveraging LinkedIn

Look no further for tips on how to stand out to employers, network with professionals in your field, and find career opportunities. LinkedIn is not just a useful tool for the future — you can grow your network and professional skills right now! Here are 5 simple tips to help make your LinkedIn profile stand out.

  1. Choose a profile picture. Upgrade your LinkedIn by adding a high quality and professional profile picture. Remember: this is your first impression to many employers.
  2. Create an eye-catching headline. Your headline should be short, informative, and 120 characters or less. Ultimately, it should capture who you are, your current positions, and your aspiring career goals.
  3. Add your education. What's your major? What classes have you taken? What skills have you gained in school that will help in your prospective field?
  4. Highlight your experiences. Organizations, achievements, positions, honors — you name it! If you have work, volunteer, or internship experience, add a section and a brief description of what you did. Incorporate good action words to show not just what you did, but what you accomplished in each position. The key is to demonstrate the impact you've made, the change you've enacted, initiatives you've led, and the results you've delivered.
  5. Request recommendations from past employers or coworkers. A recommendation is written to recognize or commend a connection, such as a colleague, business partner, professor, or mentor. There’s no limit to the number of recommendations you can request for. You can even write recommendations for your connections!

Meet Eli! Eli graduated with his Bachelor of Science in Statistics and Data Science in 2022. He is currently an Associate Biostatistician and Data Scientist for QuidelOrtho in San Diego, CA. We asked Eli to describe his current position and how he landed his current role. See his answers below.

Describe how you went about searching for jobs post-graduation. What strategies worked well?
I was actually hired into this job as a result of a technical recruiter seeing my LinkedIn profile.

What advice do you have for current students?
Make sure to include the words or phrases on your LinkedIn profile that you'd imagine a recruiter would search for to find candidates for their dream job.
