ENGL 176TJ Performance of Literature: Theatrical Jazz
"i and the dreamer and the dream"
-Con Flama, Sharon Bridgforth (2002)
This class studies postmodern African American literature and drama and critcal analysis by experimenting with texts as performance. Students analyze non-traditional genre-defying plays, performance texts, history, and identity through a creative critical informal production of texts. Readings focus on notions of family, memory, social life, and community connection. The improvisational character of jazz influences the literature and plays we’ll read. Authors may include Laurie Carlos, Robbie McCauley, Ntozake Shange, Sharon Bridgforth, Daniel Alexander Jones, Stephanie Batiste, Marita Bonner, and Langston Hughes.
Come play! We learn about literature by putting it on its feet.
No need to be good, just game!
