Dear Students,

The East Asian Languages & Cultural Studies Department has open seats in the following courses in Spring 2026! These courses are a great opportunity to learn about East Asian literature and culture and to fulfill multiple GE requirements. These courses have no prerequisites and are open to all students! 

JAPAN 80: Masterpieces of Japanese Literature
  • Fulfills GE Area G: Literature
  • Fulfills Special Subject Area: World Cultures
Course Description:  Examines a selection of works from Japanese literature, with the goal of understanding the major genres and their development over time. The cultural roles of literature, as well as criteria for critical evaluation, are also addressed.


EACS 40 - Gender and Sexuality in Modern Asia
  • Fulfills GE Area D: Social Sciences
  • Fulfills Special Subject Area: World Cultures
Course Description: Examines how modern social institutions have constructed and transformed gender and sexuality in China, Japan, Korea, India, and other Asian societies. Topics: marriage and kinship, capitalism, nationalism, modern state, third genders, commercialization of sex, public sphere and mass media.
