Horacio Roque Ramirez Central American Studies Scholarship

I. DESCRIPTION:

The Division of Social Sciences is now accepting applications for the “Horacio Roque Ramirez Central American Studies Scholarship”. The purpose of this scholarship is to celebrate Central American history, culture, community, and studies at UC Santa Barbara. The scholarship is in honor of Professor Horacio Roque Ramirez (1969-2015), whose ethnographic and archival research focused on Central Americans in the US, queer Latinx community life in San Francisco, and Latino sexuality and hope in an era of AIDS and deportation. At UCSB, he developed the courses “Central Americans in the U.S./The U.S. in Central America,” and “Salvadoran Diasporas”.

 


II. ELIGIBILITY & SELECTION CRITERIA: 


Qualified students must be pursuing a major within the Division of Social Sciences at UCSB. Each awardee will receive a $1,500 scholarship. To be eligible for the scholarship:
 

1.     Applicants must be pursuing a major within the Social Sciences.


2.     Applicants must have a 2.50 minimum GPA. 


3. Have Financial need determined by the Office of Financial Aid & Scholarships 

 

4.     Answer two questions:

a.     What is Central American Studies to you? What is the importance of Central American Studies curriculum at the university level?

 
b.     How have you contributed towards Central American Studies and/or promoting Central American culture, identity, and community at UCSB?

 
 

III. SELECTION PROCESS: 


Applications will be reviewed by the Horacio Roque Ramirez Central American Studies Scholarship Selection Committee. The Selection Committee will choose recipients based on the quality of their responses and commitment to promoting and celebrating Central American history, culture, community, and studies at UCSB.

 

Applications are due by Friday November 10, 2023, by 11:59 PM. Awardees will be notified of their selection by December 10, 2023. 

IV. SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENT EXPECTATIONS: 

 

1.     Awardees will be asked to write gratitude letters to share for potential donors for scholarship.

 

2.     Awardees will be highly encouraged to attend an award ceremony to receive the award. The award ceremony is tentatively scheduled for Winter 2024.
