Summer Sessions is right around the corner, with pass times opening Monday, April 8th.

Prep for a summer of sun by checking out the course preview on our website and to begin planning your summer!

AS Book Bank: Return Deadline

If you rented a free textbook from the AS Book Bank make sure to return your textbook so they can prepare for the next quarter before the end of week 10.

They understand you may still need your textbooks to study for finals so please just reach out to them to make accommodations past week 10.

Spring Break CalFresh Advising

Been too busy to apply to CalFresh? Apply over Spring Break!

Even though our in person center will be closed for Spring Break our CalFresh Advocates will be available virtually by appointment!

Set yourself up for a great Spring Quarter by getting your CalFresh Application or SAR 7 done over Spring Break!

(Please note the links below take a few minutes to open)

Avoid delays in your calfresh food benefits, turn in your SAR 7 Report. SAR 7's submitted after March 11th are considered late. There is still time to restore you case after March 11th. The SAR-7 is like a check-in the county does for anyone that was approved or renewed for Calfresh benefits and has been receiving benefits for 6 months. 

Failure to submit your SAR-7 will result in benefits being discontinued.

Even if you have no changes in the last 6 months you are still required to submit a SAR 7 Report. 

Finals Week Basic Needs Services Hours

Basic needs services are available through finals week! Please reference notable hours for finals week below!

The Mirarmar Pantry, AS Food Bank, and Basic Needs Advising Center will all be open through finals week!

USS Meal Plan Scholarship

Working in collaboration with Basic Needs and Housing, Dining & Auxiliary Enterprises, USS has announced the launch of their USS Meal Plan Scholarship Pilot Program for the incoming quarter, Spring 2024! 🍎🛒

Qualifying students who sign up and are approved will be able to receive access to a meal plan scholarship of up to 5 swipes per week starting in Spring 2024. 

(Must be a USS Student to Qualify)

Deadline to sign up is March 17th, 2024.

Mental Health Equity Grant

If you're currently paying out-of-pocket for you mental health services (therapy, psychiatrist, prescriptions etc), consider applying to the Mental Health Equity Grant to help with the costs!

The grant is intended to assist with unexpected medical expenses related to mental health services. Examples include, hospitalizations, mental health service co-pays, transportation to and from mental health services, etc. Students apply through the SMERF Website. https://smerf.sa.ucsb.edu/apply-smerf-grant

Financial Wellness Awareness Month

Financial Wellness Awareness Month (FWAM) occurs over the entire month of April and focuses on spreading awareness and educating people on the importance of financial well-being. 

The focus encompasses a variety of financial concepts such as budgeting, savings, investing, managing debt, and planning for your future. This month is important because it allows UCSB students to check in on their current financial well-being and empowers members with the knowledge and skills needed to make good financial decisions. 

Students that participate in FWAM events during the month will be entered into a drawing to win prizes!!!

Farmers Market: Market Match

Did you know that most farmers markets in Santa Barbara and Goleta have an EBT matching program?? This includes the Farmers Market in the Camino Royale Market Place! You can bring your EBT card and charge up to 10 dollars onto it. You will get 10 dollars worth of tokens eligible for any food at the market. In addition to that you will get 10 more dollars of tokens that can be used for produce FOR FREE. This means you will get a total of $20 to spend at the Farmers Market and it will only cost you $10!

Study Jam and Tea

Come to the MENASARC Study Jam to study for finals with other students and enjoy snacks and refreshments!

Guardian Scholar Pi-Day 🍕

Be sure to stop by the visitor center this pi-day. Finish the quarter on a high note! 🍕✨ UCSB Guardian Scholars has you covered with study supplies like blue books and scantrons. Conquer exams and make this quarter a success!

Library Study Break

Take a healthy study break before finals. Stretch, color, grab snacks, and pick up free bluebooks and scantrons. Registration includes tea, mindful activities, and a place to relax. Sign-ups for mini-massages with professional massage therapists are first-come, first-served, in-person, starting 10 minutes before the event starts. In collaboration with the UCSB Library, AS PMHC and ONDAS.

IV Farmers Market

🌱🍎 Introducing the Isla Vista Farmers Market!  In Isla Vista, everyone deserves access to fresh, nutritious food. With the Farmers Market, They are creating a space where residents can find locally sourced produce, support local farmers, and foster a sense of community. Cultivate a healthier, more resilient Isla Vista. Join in nourishing your bodies and community!

Basic Needs Advising Center Hours

The Basic Needs Advising Center is a hub for all your basic needs questions. The Basic Needs Office is located in the UCen. You can stop by any timeduring open hours without an appointment to ask questions or get help applying for CalFresh.

The Basic Needs Advising Center will have normal hours for finals week. Our El Centro location will be closed for finals week!

AS Food Bank Hours

The AS Food Bank is located in the UCen at the back of the food court on the second floor. You can go anytime they are open to pick up groceries. Be sure to bring your access card! You can also order online for mobile order pick-up here.

Miramar Pantry Hours 

The Miramar Pantry is located in the Sierra Madre Villages in student housing. You can go any time they are open to pick up groceries. The pantry has a unique assortment of food because they also have refrigerators to store perishables.

Health and Wellness Center

The Health and Wellness Center has a unique assortment of services available to students. They have tea, quiet places to study, weekly meditation, and weekly massages! They are located on the first floor of the Student Resource Building. 

RCSGD Hours

The RCSGD offers various services and resources to ensure that LGBT+ students, staff, and faculty have the support they need to succeed at UC Santa Barbara and beyond! They are located on the 3rd floor in the Student Resource Building.

Career Services Hours

Career Services hosts many events and job fairs. Visit their physical location for help with job finding and resume building!

Prawn Fried Rice

Ingredients

  • 250g long-grain brown rice

  • 150g frozen peas

  • 100g mangetout

  • 1½ tbsp rapeseed oil

  • 1 onion, finely chopped

  • 2 garlic cloves, crushed

  • thumb-sized piece of ginger, finely grated

  • 150g raw king prawns

  • 3 medium eggs, beaten

  • 2 tsp sesame seeds

  • 1 tbsp low-salt soy sauce

  • ½ tbsp rice or white wine vinegar

  • 4 spring onions, trimmed and slice


    Directions

  • STEP 1

    Cook the rice following pack instructions. Boil a separate pan of water and blanch the peas and mangetout for 1 min, then drain and set aside with the rice.

  • STEP 2

    Meanwhile, heat the oil in a large non-stick frying pan or wok over a medium heat and fry the onion for 10 mins or until golden brown. Add the garlic and ginger and fry for a further minute. Tip in the blanched vegetables and fry for 5 mins, then the prawns and fry for a further 2 mins. Stir the rice into the pan then push everything to one side. Pour the beaten eggs into the empty side of the pan and stir to scramble them. Fold everything together with the sesame seeds, soy and vinegar, then finish with the spring onions scattered over.

    Done!

Work Study Referral Cut-Off Date

Due to high referral rates, federal work-study funding has been fully exhausted requiring a work-study referral cutoff date for this academic year

Work-Study Referrals will now be available to students awarded with Work-Study through April 10th, 2024. After April 10th, students without a completed referral from the hiring department will no longer be able to accept their Work-Study awards in My Aid Status for the 2023-2024 academic year.

The deadline for on campus departments to submit new Work-Study Referrals has been set as April 10th, 2024. All referrals must be received via fina...@sa.ucsb.edu by the close of business (5pm) April 10th. Referrals received after this date will not be processed.

Bike Path Repairs

If you are staying in town during Spring Break please be aware that sections of bike paths at the following locations will be closed for repair March 25 – March 29.

 

· El Colegio bike path on the east and west sides of Los Carneros Road bike underpass

· Ocean Road bike path between Trigo Road and Madrid Road

 

For the safety of both the workers and cyclists, cyclists will be required to walk their bikes along the marked detour routes as shown in the maps below. Signage providing directions will be provided.

Please use maps below as reference. Red areas will be closed!

Trans Visibility Week

The Resource Center for Sexual & Gender Diversity (RCSGD) is proud to share the dates of their 5th annual Trans Week of Visibility happening April 22nd - April 26th

Trans Week of Visibility (TWOV) is a week to honor and support Transgender, Non-Binary, and Gender-nonconforming students on campus. They have an exciting lineup of events that will be released on March 31st just in time for Trans Day of Visibility! Make sure you sign up for their newsletter to be in the know!

These resources range in duration from 30 days, to entire quarters, or even permanant gift device that you do not have to return!

Just stop by when you can! Check out Shoreline or the basic needs website for upcoming event information.

Microwave Recipes

Don't have access to a full kitchen or want something easy that you can just throw into the microwave? Check out what you can make in your microwave below!

Microwave Baked Potato 🥔

Ingredients:

  • 1 Large Russet Potato
  • 1 Tablespoon Butter
  • Salt and Pepper
  • 2 Tablespoons Shredded Cheddar
  • Sour Cream

Directions: Clean potato and prick it with a fork. Microwave for 5 minutes, flip and microwave another 5 minutes. Take it out and slice it in half longwise. Slightly mash the insides with a fork. Add the butter, cheese, salt, and pepper on top. Microwave for another minute. Top with sour cream and done!

Microwave Corn on the Cob

Ingredients:

  • 1 Fresh Ear of Corn
  • Butter
  • Salt


Directions: Remove husk from corn. Dappen a paper towel and wrap it around your corn. Cook in the microwave for 3-5 minutes. Add salt and butter to taste. Done!

Microwave Scrambled Eggs

Ingredients:

  • 4 Eggs
  • 0.25 Cups of Milk
  • Salt to Taste
  • Cheddar Cheese (Optional)


Directions: Add all ingredients into a microwave safe bowl. Whisk well. Microwave for 30 seconds. Whisk the eggs again. Return to the microwave for another 30 seconds. Repeat this whisking then microwaving for about 2.5 minutes or until you are satisfied with the consistency of the eggs. On your last round of microwaving feel free to add cheddar cheese! Done!
