Dear Meghan Zero,I hope you are doing well. My name is Sadie Parker, and I am a fourth year Political Science and Economics double major. I am starting a club on campus and wanted to reach out to see if you could help me get the word out to students in the Global Studies department.
When I studied abroad, I joined the Diplomacy Society at the University of Edinburgh. It was a truly incredible experience. Every week we hosted workshops that began with a short lecture on a topic (decolonization and development strategies, CIA conspiracy theories, career paths in diplomacy, etc.) followed by guided discussion on the issues. I found that the club was intellectually stimulating, fostered diverse ideological perspectives, and informed me of real paths in international relations. In addition to these workshops, the club hosted events where they invited U.S. Consulate members, the leader of the Dutch International Police, and professors to speak.
It is my hope to replicate this club here at UCSB by joining together students that are interested in diplomatic and foreign careers but lack exposure in Santa Barbara. My plan is to create a list of topics for discussion, invite professors to give a lecture on a topic of interest, invite diplomats in residence to speak, and reach out to foreign consulates that are located in LA. Once enough students join, students can present topics of interest for us to discuss. The conversations are meant to be non-partisan and focused on problem solving. At this point, I have 9 members but would love to expand and have a more competitive pool for my officer board.
I would greatly appreciate it if you could share this information with students so that we can create a deeper IR community here at UCSB. Please let me know if you have any questions or need further information. I will also attach a google form for interested students.
Thank you for your time and I look forward to hearing from you.
Sincerely,
Sadie Parker
