Subject: [UCSBADVS] New Music Ensemble: Son Jarocho 🎸💃🎵
Hello UCSB students! The UCSB Music Department invites you to join our new Son Jarocho Ensemble (will be MUS A 70SJ/170SJ/270SJ). Led by renowned Son Jarocho artist Jorge Mijangos, the group will meet on Wednesdays from 6 to 9pm. No experience is necessary to join, and the department will provide a jarana (guitar-like string instrument) for each student. The course is not on GOLD yet, but will be available for registration soon!
Son jarocho is a folk music and dance style from Veracruz, Mexico, that blends Mexican, Spanish and African elements. It is deeply tied to nature, rural life, and social justice. It largely focuses on fandango–a space that promotes community and cultural identity through song, dance, and verse.
