Hey all,
Just wondering if any of you have had a Downy try nesting in a blue bird box?? This guy has been here every day for a week and tonight at 6pm he was in it for a while even when I came and sat outside now they are all upset chirping away! Lol Is this rare?   Thanks Lisa

Lisa:
Almost every year I have a Downy Woodpecker that roosts in one of my Bluebird houses during the Fall and Winter months.  The downside of this behavior is that Downy Woodpeckers also has widened the entrance holes in my House Wren and Chickadee bird houses as well.

We have had one overwinter in one of our bluebird boxes for many years. No damage to the entrance thankfully, but has scared me by flying out when I try to clean the boxes out in the spring

Oddly we have had a northern flicker sleeping in our kestrel box for about a week. (Orangeville NY)
