What is the hummingbird situation in Monroe County?  Rochester NY.  Im getting questions from others about the lack of them this year.  I have my usual one hummer that visits infrequently in June and July.  Had one fueling up for a day in May as usual to continue migration north i presume.  So I'm seeing what i always see in Monroe but others aren't.  In Yates county most of my hummingbirds didn't return...

I'm near Fairport and having regular hummer visits.

Lots of hummers here. The feeders are always less busy now as there are lots of flowers and the adults are eating more protein because they are raising young.

I have 2 feeders up since mid-April. Judging by chases, I'd guess that 2
families usually nest in/near my Penfield back yard. However, this year
I spotted only two quick visits by transient birds; otherwise zilch. I
usually attract yellow jackets, 2 or 3 bald-face hornets, and once in a
while even a red hornet. But without the usual spillage, those are
absent also. Oriole visits to 2 jelly feeders are below normal, but
catbirds are eating jelly as usual.

On a more positive note, bluebirds that ate crumbs under the suet feeder
during the winter are now eating suet direct from the feeder, as well as
follow crumbs that drop.

I have seen a few but our trumpet vine that usually attracts them isn’t blossoming as well as previous years too and I don’t know why.

Normal RTHB activity in Rush, with possibly two families visiting several times a day.

Just a bit to think about
It is fun, interesting and probably useful to exchange information, kick around ideas, and tell stories.

However, when it comes to any hint of fact or science in tossing about numbers like this, it really is not there.
None of you/us has any real idea of the number of hummers or any other species using our feeders unless we
are marking the birds in some way or some have distinctive plumage. From maxima at any one time, we can say
we have a minimum of x adult males plus y adult females and plus maybe z immatures (if we are good and careful
with ID). People dealing with hummers sometimes toss around WAGs to use, like multiply by about 6 the most you
see at once to get some idea.

Historical illustration (I've been gathering and summarizing local records for a long time.):
Two bird banders in Town of Greece decided to try to find out how many House Finches they really were feeding.
They were typically counting up to 20-30 max at their feeders at any point in time and assumed they were close enough
to be seeing many that circulated around to the local feeder locations. After a couple of months, they had banded on
the order of 200 (aging memory not perfect on the detail) and now were still seeing the same numbers at the feeders with
about 1/3 of any flock having bands. Even trying to gather data, it is not clear at that point what the real total was. Certainly
    greater than 200.

    Again, sharing experiences is good/fun!
