Dear Colleagues,

You are warmly invited to join a special GA4GH Community Meeting focused on laying the groundwork for GA4GH AI and Large Language Model (LLM) initiatives.
Meeting details

Date: Wednesday, 17 September
Time10pm UK / 5pm ET / 2pm PT / 7am AEST (Thurs)
Zoom: https://us02web.zoom.us/j/4426465151
Passcode: GA4GH
This meeting will bring together discussions that have been taking place across different Work Streams to explore how GA4GH can engage more systematically with AI and LLMs. The Regulatory and Ethics Work Stream (REWS) will also join, given their Generative AI efforts, helping align GA4GH-wide activities.

We will build on earlier conversations led by Nicole Vasilevsky, Tudor Groza, Monica Muñoz Torres, and Benjamin Berk, as well as discussions from Connect Boston 2025 and the Steering Committee meeting in May. In parallel, the Cloud Work Stream is also developing a Federated Machine Learning group, creating natural points of overlap.

Discussion Items (final agenda to be confirmed)

  • Overview of AI/LLM discussions so far (Nicole, Tudor, Moni, Benjamin)
  • REWS Generative AI initiative and alignment opportunities (Ma'an Zawati)
  • Cross-Work Stream AI activities: Clin/Pheno, Cloud, REWS, and others (Venkat Malladi)
  • Use cases and opportunities for community/industry engagement (e.g. MLCommons collaborations, benchmarks, and DUOS evaluation) (guided by David Steinberg)
  • Next steps and prep for Connect 2025 session: Agentic Science: Enabling AI Agents to Reason with Biomedical Data via GA4GH Standards (Marc Fiume)
  • Future direction: study group, new Work Stream, or other structure? (with Sasha guiding)

This meeting is an important first step toward a structured GA4GH-wide AI initiative, potentially evolving into a formal study group or Work Stream.

We look forward to your participation.

Best,
Beatrice
