Job Summary

Under direction of Senior Staff Veterinarians provide veterinary medical care support for non-human primates in both hospital and outpatient areas. Work as a veterinary generalist providing all aspects of health care and preventive medicine to colony animals (non-human primates) as well as providing veterinary services to investigators. Participate in clinical and research veterinary medicine.

The California National Primate Research Center, CNPRC at UC Davis, is an Organized Research Unit that conducts interdisciplinary research programs on significant human health problems where non-human primates is the animal of choice. In addition to its major efforts in the area of research, the CNPRC is also committed to both UC Davis and NIH missions of teaching and service.

Salary Range: $5,916.67 - $12,733.33/MO.

No. of Positions: 1

Appointment Type: Contract for a period of 12 months, with possibility for extension, and/or transition to Career.

Percentage of Time: Fulltime, 100%

QUALIFICATIONS

Required:

-Doctorate degree of Veterinary Medicine (DVM or VMD) from an AVMA-accredited veterinary college with clinical veterinary experience.

-Experience performing veterinary clinical duties in laboratory animal medicine specific to nonhuman primates.

-A CA State Veterinary License.

-Applied knowledge of veterinary medicine as it applies to the diagnosis and treatment of nonhuman primates.

-Applied knowledge of institutional, local, state, national, and international rules and regulations governing the use and care of nonhuman primates (USDA Animal Welfare Act, ILAR Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals, Endangered Species Act, FDA Good Laboratory Practice Regulation, and California Public Health Law).

-Skills to read and interpret complex documents such as research protocols, regulations, policies.

-Interpersonal skills to interact professionally, positively, and collaboratively with others in a spirit of service while ensuring compliance requirements are met in a reasonable timeframe.

-Communication, time management, and customer service skills to work both as part of a team and independently.

-Experience in humane care and housing of animals with understanding of standards and guidelines established by the American Association for Accreditation of Laboratory Animal Care (AAALAC). 

 Preferred:

-Experience working as a laboratory animal veterinarian with the completion of a laboratory animal residency program.

-Experience in preventive medicine programs required for laboratory housed nonhuman primates including quarantine procedures, tuberculin testing, vaccination, parasitology and bacteriology, and virology screening programs.

-Veterinary clinical, anesthetic, and surgical skills with a variety of animals.

-Skills to interact with pathologists to identify patterns of disease in colony animals.

-Experience in gross necropsy procedures and basic histopathology of the nonhuman primate.

-Experience to teach in the classroom situation, seminar format, and on a one-to-one basis; and to make presentations at national and international specialty meetings.

-Working knowledge of regulations governing the use of animals in research (e.g., USDA, AAALAC).

-Completion of a Primate Residency Program.
