DESCRIPTION

The Gulf Breeze Zoo, a 50-acre facility located in the beautiful Florida panhandle, is expanding and searching for additional keepers to join our team. The Zoo maintains a collection of over 900 animals including great apes, carnivores, primates, birds, reptiles and domestics.

Our Primate/Carnivore team work with a wide variety of animals including but not limited to; various types of tamarins, white-handed gibbons, siamang, spider monkeys, binturong, black and white ruffed lemurs, lions, cheetahs, bears, etc. 

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Provide for the care and welfare (husbandry) of assigned animals in the department, such as following prescribed diets and feeding procedures and protocols for cleaning/disinfecting of animal enclosures and holding areas

• Observe animals in the department daily for reproductive behavior, abnormal behavior, compatibility issues, or potential health problems, reporting these to the supervisor(s).

• Prepare, distribute, and keep records of animal enrichment as outlined by the enrichment protocol

• Train animals using positive reinforcement, with the supervision of an experienced trainer, as scheduled and directed by supervisor(s).

• Maintain daily reports, logs, research, medical and reproductive records and work orders.

• Provide assistance to the veterinary staff by administering medications as prescribed and participating in related medical procedures as requested.

 

EDUCATION AND PRE-REQUISITES

·   An Associates or Bachelor degree is preferred but those combined with hands-on experience will be given preference.

·   Preferred applicants will have prior experience working with primates; tamarins and/or lesser apes.

·   Applicants must possess a strong work ethic, a willingness to learn, and a valid driver’s license.

·   All applicants must be physically fit and active, able to lift 40 pounds comfortably and be able to work in all types of weather.

·   Experience with power tools is also a plus.

·   Must maintain a non-smoking/vaping work environment.
