Jungle Friends is hiring a Sanctuary Director. We are a large monkey sanctuary on a 44-acre property in Gainesville. We currently have 239 monkeys- capuchin, squirrel, spider, marmoset, and tamarin. They are kept in large outdoor habitats with access to indoor buildings.
Jungle Friends Primate Sanctuary provides permanent high-quality sanctuary care for New World monkeys being retired from laboratory research, ex-pets, or monkeys who have been confiscated by the authorities.
A deep love of all animals and commitment to the organization’s sanctuary mission will create success in the position.
Responsibilities
Manage every aspect of the monkey sanctuary section of the property
Work together with the office manager for the efficient running of the property
Duties include general husbandry for 239 New World monkeys. No hands-on care or transfers are done. We have two veterinarians and a system of runways for moving enclosures.
Walking and standing for 8-12 hours per day between enclosures to direct staff, volunteers, as well as assist them as needed
Preparing and serving diets (we have a chef)
Clean and repair any landscape habitat and indoor buildings
Monitor the monkeys’ physical and emotional well-being
Assist with oral medications
Create a positive environment for volunteers and encourage them to come back to volunteer. Train paid staff to work well with volunteers.
Communicate and report to the founder all workings of the sanctuary
Requirements:
Being gentle and patient with monkeys
Being a people person able to motivate volunteers and staff as well as communicate well any corrections.
Being a good judge of character in hiring new caretakers with the assistance of office staff
Ability to work outdoors. Temperatures will sometimes drop below freezing, so you must be able to handle the cold. In the summer, you must be able to work in heat and humidity. RV hookups are available and a 3 BR home. No cigarettes. Background checks are done.
Salary:
Maximum salary is $40,000 yearly salary plus housing
Your primate caregivers are paid $10-17 per hour + overtime. Paid internships available.
