Job Description:

The Division of Colony Management within the Emory National Primate Research Center at Emory University is currently seeking a highly motivated and qualified full-time Supervisor, Research Specialist to join our team. This employee will work under minimal supervision, coordinate activities of the team while also balancing administrative duties. The ideal candidate will have previous supervisory experience, a good working knowledge of the management of animal breeding colonies (especially nonhuman primates), as well as data and analytical skills.

The Colony Management Unit is responsible for monitoring the social stability and social health of captive group-housed rhesus macaques and sooty mangabeys at the Field Station. The Field Station is a dynamic work environment where success is dependent on multi-unit collaboration.

Detailed JOB DESCRIPTION

  • Administers Colony Management programs/studies by hiring and supervising research personnel; participating in project planning; and developing, implementing and evaluating protocols, techniques and procedures associated with management of the colony and data storage/use/analysis.
  • Supervises Colony Management staff by orienting, training and providing performance feedback.
  • Assists in developing and submitting grant proposals.
  • Participate in planning meetings and schedule departmental procedures.
  • Develop efficiency plans and perform a wide range of procedures, including specimen collection and preparation and experimental procedures for routine and specialized studies.
  • Maintain colony records and monitor the quality of departmental data.
  • Selects or develops effective research methodologies.
  • Collect and assist with report compilation for grants and publications.
  • Demonstrate and train staff in behavioral observation methods, data organization and data analysis.
  • Recommend new equipment and supply purchases for the department.
  • Keeps abreast of safety procedures and monitors the handling, storage, and disposal of hazardous substances.
  • There may be opportunities for conference attendance, presentation, and co-authorship.
  • Perform related responsibilities as required.

 MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: 

  • Bachelor's degree in a scientific field and four years of research experience of which one year is in a supervisory role in a laboratory OR equivalent combination of experience, education, and training.
