The California National Primate Research Center (CNPRC) is an Organized Research Unit that conducts interdisciplinary research programs on significant human health related problems where nonhuman primates are the animal models of choice. In addition to its major efforts in research, the Primate Center is also committed to its mission of teaching and service. The role of this position is to provide medical and technical support to veterinary staff and CNPRC investigators in Primate Medicine. Employee may be required to work with animals/tissue infected with biohazardous agents such HIV/SIV virus, measles virus, and others.

Job Summary

Under general supervision of the Training & Development Manager, the Training Specialist works in support of the CNPRC Compliance, Education, & Training Services, which includes the development, coordination, and assurance of AAALAC, AALAS, and GLP compliant and accredited training procedures and practices in laboratory animal science.

The primary focus will be training animal care and research staff, students, faculty, and assisting in the onboarding of new staff joining Primate Services and Center’s Research Units PIs’ labs that require animal training and handling and maintain training compliance of current staff. Provide training support in the areas of research support and animal care for laboratory animals maintained at the CNPRC, coordinating, and completing a large volume of tasks to meet investigators, clinical and operational needs while demonstrating strong leadership, high energy, and a knowledge base in CNPRC animal care and technical functions and staff training. Research support must be performed in a professional manner and will require regular contact with investigative staff. Facilitate and implement a comprehensive animal training program in animal laboratory science.

Works, as delegated by department management, to ensure the successful completion of training activities and maintenance of technical skills. Provides administrative and organizational support in training program planning, onboarding new hires, scheduling, coordination, document management and reporting. Performs quality assurance and/or maintenance of plans, SOPs, worksheets, and other training aides and systems. This position conducts skills-based training to employees, academic appointees, and students, provides training development support to the CNPRC community, develops training materials, and tracks training progress.

The incumbent will conduct training in both animal care and research technical support and will work under minimal supervision in compliance with federal, state, and local regulations, industry standards governing animal research (NIH/OLAW/AAALAC) and all safety procedures according to NIH standards and standard operating procedures (SOPs).

Contribute to the accomplishment of Primate Services goals, objectives, and standards. Provide leadership, including efficient and clear training assignments to trainees, support departmental growth (orientation and training of a diverse workforce of animal care and research staff), provide training assessments of employees’ performance during training sessions, which includes constructive and positive feedback, and providing leadership in all areas of animal care, through leading, directing, organizing and monitoring activities and functions to ensure overall completion of tasks assigned, while ensuring service excellence.

 This position is within the Compliance, Education, & Training Unit (CETU) of the Division of Primate Services.

Employee is required to work with animals (nonhuman primates) that are either naturally or experimentally infected with potentially hazardous infectious agents such as COVID-19 (SARS-CO2), HIV, SIV, Herpes B, ZIKA, influenza, Chikungunya Virus, and Measles. The emphasis is training employees in the areas of safety, the wear and use of protective clothing, aseptic/sterile techniques, good laboratory practices, and infectious control.

Additional Minimum License/Certification:

•AALAS certification at the LAT or LATG level.

Minimum Education/Experience:           

Bachelor’s degree in science, preferably in related field such as Animal Sciences, Biology, Physiology, etc.

•Experience facilitating training sessions (in-class, online, and one-on-one/small groups) in animal laboratory sciences using skills-based methodologies, on-the-job training, and adult-learning strategies in an animal research facility or animal vivaria.

•5+ years of experience in the care of experimental animals in research setting and 3+ years of demonstrated experience in a training role in laboratory animal science, veterinary technical training, infection control practices, health and safety practice and evaluation in a research environment, which includes quality assurance and compliance management in the development, and evaluation, documentation, and recordkeeping of regulatory training documents.

Minimum Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSA):

•Knowledge and understanding of animal health and husbandry, behavior, disease control, sanitation processes, aseptic techniques and environmental changes that affect laboratory animals.

•Above average proficiency use of Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint). Demonstrated prior experience in a leadership role highly preferred.

•Ability to make independent decisions while having the ability to use proper techniques to safely perform standard clinical and technical procedures.

•Skills and abilities to adapt easily to new software programs to support GLP and animal-human contact training, and training on applicable procedures and SOPs within the area of lab animal science.

Additional Preferred License/Certification:

• Professional certification in animal laboratory science (e.g., AALAS, AAALAC, and ASCP).

Preferred Education/Experience:            :        

•Applied experience to assess staff performance during training and skills building sessions and provide appropriate feedback.

•Animal handling training and skills to work with nonhuman primates, which includes recognizing, changes in physical appearance and behavior; experience in performing a variety of animal laboratory procedures such as TB testing, administering IM injections and sample collection; Skill in breeding indoor housed animals, and femoral blood sampling in infant and adult animals

•Experience performing detailed husbandry in all primate housing areas including nursery, indoor, noninfectious, infectious, and outdoor colony.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSA):

•Ability to work cross functionally on process improvements. Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables; the ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form; and demonstrates attention to detail-to-details.

•Skill to adhere to established standards for educational quality according to industry standards, which includes but not limited to skills to research and analyze learning and development resources and develop recommendations.

•Knowledge and understanding of adherence to biohazard containment procedures necessary for performance in BSL 2 & 3 facility.
