Salary Range: $85,500.00 - $202,600.00  

The California National Primate Research Center, CNPRC at UC Davis, is an Organized Research Unit that conducts interdisciplinary research programs on significant human health problems where non- human primates is the animal research model of choice. In addition to its major efforts in the area of research, the CNPRC is also committed to both UC Davis and NIH missions of teaching and service.

Job Summary

·         Teach and provide dyadic training in clinical primatology and medicine (and surgery) to veterinary students, residents, externs (visiting veterinarians and faculty), and Animal Health Technicians.

·         Provide quality service in clinical and research support to Principal Investigators and their research programs. 

·         Pursue cutting edge and innovation in clinical primatology research and laboratory animal science and medicine.

·         Provide quality clinical health and medical care of colony nonhuman primates.

The Professional Veterinary staff in the Department of Primate Medicine is responsible to provide veterinary medical care management for in-patient and outpatient areas supporting colony health of 5,000+ non-human primates housed indoors and in outdoor enclosures.  Primate Medicine is committed to fostering an environment that promotes quality clinical and medical health care through teamwork, cooperation, and collaboration by building professional relationships with clinicians, Principal Investigators, trainees and students and staff. This is a shared responsibility where all Staff Veterinarians are mission critical in supporting colony health management and provide high quality research clinical support services to Principal Investigators in primatology and laboratory clinical medicine. Primate Medicine’s primary goals are to accomplish the CNPRC’s mission:

Oversee and coordinate workflow of assigned Animal Health Technicians (AHTs) including addressing their questions, providing any needed clinical support or technical training of care procedures, protocols, and making sure all of work is completed in accordance with CNPRC Animal Healthcare standards. Evaluate chronic metabolic cases such as diabetics, water restricted animals, kidney transplants, etc. as necessary. Perform all clinical procedures including skin grafts, radiographs, examinations, etc. File and document laboratory results and assist in the documentation and maintenance of medical problem lists, long-term outpatient records, and review hospital and outpatient records and radiology reports. Prepare shift and case management summaries of both planned and unanticipated activities that occur during weekend shifts. Supporting the UC Davis Veterinary Training program, provide education and training to veterinary students, residents, rotating Lab Animal Medicine residents, visiting veterinarians, and clinical veterinary technicians in all aspects of primatology clinical laboratory medicine. Provide onsite shift hours and on-call coverage.

Provide veterinary clinical primatology research support services to Principal Investigators in scientific research through collaboration and specialty medicine, which includes, collaborating with research investigators in all aspects of clinical research design, clinical consultation, and implementation in the use of nonhuman primates, and perform clinical primatology medicine supporting Principal Investigators’ research programs. Research may include, but is not limited to, the study of spontaneous and induced animal diseases, improved diagnosis, and the treatment of disease of non-human primates in order to promote the translational benefits of human health and animal welfare.

Reporting to Senior Manager of Primate Veterinary Services and under general direction, provide all aspects of veterinary health care and preventive medicine care management, which includes performing routine animal care rounds of emergency and critical animal care cases. Duties include, Perform clinical and surgical procedures on nonhuman primates supporting multidisciplinary and translational research projects in Neuroscience, Infectious Diseases, Respiratory Diseases, and Reproductive Science and Regenerative Medicine. Provide clinical, preventative, and routine health surveillance, emergency medicine, intensive care, surgery, radiology, ultrasound, pharmacology, anesthesia, endoscopy, nursery and geriatric care to nonhuman primates.
