Hi!

I'm reaching out to this list of close contacts (BCC'ed) because we have an immediate opening on my Industrial Decarbonization team at 5 Lakes Energy at either the Consultant or Senior Consultant level. The position will be remote (5LE is a fully remote company) with expectations for travel 2-3 times per year (most likely to the upper Midwest/Michigan or Washington, DC). Preference may be given to a candidate living in the Midwest. 5LE salary and benefits are competitive.

I invite you to forward this message to potentially interested folks within your network, as well as to invite them to connect with me directly (eboa...@5lakesenergy.com). We are exploring options within our network before opening a more formal posting online. Ideally, we will hire within the next month.

Additional details are below. Thanks!

-Elizabeth

The ideal candidate would possess:

  • MS or PhD in engineering or physical science with some career experience
  • Skilled in the research process, quantitative modeling, and (at least) basic data mining/management skills
  • High emotional intelligence and self-awareness, demonstrated ability to build trust with and relate to marginalized communities and groups
  • High motivation and self-starter, with the ability to take direction and engage as a constructive, team-oriented employee
  • Detail oriented, strong writing skills
  • The ability to manage own projects under a moderate level of supervision (i.e., Consultant level with 2-3 years of work experience, or Senior Consultant level with 5+ years of directly related work experience)
  • Some existing awareness of industrial systems, the challenges and opportunities to decarbonizing the U.S. manufacturing/industrial sector, and a strong interest in developing a portfolio in this area (as opposed to buildings, residential, transport)

Broadly, our portfolio currently includes:

  • Supporting/leading state advocacy coalitions in industrial decarbonization strategy development and implementation
  • Technical support and advice to state agencies regarding industrial decarbonization strategy implementation
  • Technical support for advocacy campaigns and coalitions specific to green steel
  • Utility regulatory strategy development and implementation, including expert witness testimony, in relation to C&I portfolios for gas and electric utilities
  • Air regulatory strategy development and implementation, including expert witness testimony, in relation to large industrial facilities (major source/Title V permits)
  • Periodic technical support to other 5LE teams or other consulting firms on projects needing either industry expertise or waste management/recycling expertise (i.e., where the focus is on energy-related materials and systems, like batteries, solar, wind turbines)

Our broad industrial decarbonization strategy work currently focuses on Michigan, Minnesota, and Wisconsin (in that order in terms of relative effort), while our green steel work focuses on any state with an integrated primary steel mill or direct reduction ironmaking facility (and states seeking to develop and implement new strategies in this spaces). 'Technical support' typically means quantitative modeling, mixed methods research with stakeholder engagement, research and writing of white papers and reports, and other technical analyses, but we also engage directly with communities and community leaders when clients ask us to (e.g., invited presentations at community center events).

Current projects/activities we're kicking off and where this individual would immediately have the chance to step in:

·                     A policy-oriented industrial decarbonization roadmap for Michigan (EGLE OCE is a primary partner), which will conclude in Q3 2026.

·                     A technical industrial decarbonization roadmap for Minnesota to build on the qualitative perspectives presented in our phase 1 net-zero roadmap, which will wrap up Q2 2027.

·                     Several strategic activities related to utility readiness for industrial electrification, running through Q4 2026. All of these efforts have multiple core partners, making them good networking opportunities, in addition to skill-developing experiences.
