Proyecto Washu is an Ecuadorian organization dedicated to biodiversity conservation since 2012. As part of our Primate Conservation and Research Program this position offer is focused on the research of wild primate populations of Brown headed spider monkeys (Ateles fusciceps fusciceps) and Mantled Howler monkeys (Alouatta palliata aequatorialis) distributed in a fragmented landscape of the Manabí Province in the northwest of Ecuador. Currently, we are looking for a volunteer research assistant. Please be aware that we are offering a non-paid position.


THE RESPONSIBILITY AND ACTIVITIES OF THE RESEARCH ASSISTANT/ VOLUNTEER ARE:

  • Comply with the organizations normative

  • Collect ecological and behavioral data of primate populations in the study area

  • Support in environmental education activities

  • Deliver processed data, prepare reports and/or products within established time

  • Reforestation activities

WHAT DOES THE PROGRAM OFFER?

  • Training in neotropical primate behavior and ecology

  • Training in primate surveys and plant phenology.

  • Strength individual capacities in research and work experience in a rainforest  environment.

  • Participation in environmental education activities with the local schools

  • Certification document of the time spend in the research.

  • Possibility to use the collected data for undergraduate, master or PhD thesis.

WHAT REQUIREMENTS ARE NEEDED TO PARTICIPATE? This job requires a HIGH LEVEL OF PHYSICAL FITNESS, the ability to work in a rainforest (which involves high temperatures, humidity, regular rainfall, and insects) and a good ability to walk in mountain areas with very high slopes. What do we expect from you?

  • Minimum duration of stay: 6 months

  • Be a student/graduate from biology or natural sciences

  • Good health state and excellent physical fitness

  • Experience working in the field/remote areas

  • Punctuality

  • Full commitment, responsibility, an interest in all projects-related activities

  • Ability to work in team and rural zones

  • Ability to live together with different people for a long period of time

  • Intermediate level of English

  • Foreigners: basic level of Spanish

WHAT IS THE DURATION AND SCHEDULE OF WORK? This volunteer position has a duration of 6 months, which includes a holiday period of two weeks in the middle of the stay. The work schedule consists of five and a half days work per week and one and a half day to rest. The work starts early in the morning (5 or 6 am) and ends in the afternoon (6 pm).

HOW IS THE LODGING AND FOOD? We stay at a house located close to the study area. This house is made of wood and the accommodations are basic (bathroom, shower and kitchen). We have electricity, and Internet access. The volunteers prepare the breakfast themselves and the lunch and dinner are prepared by a local family.

COST OF LIVING PER DAY:16 USD (including lodging and three meals per day, please be aware these costs are covered by you)
