Primatology research internship in the Peruvian Amazon

Are you ready to embark on an unforgettable journey into the heart of the Amazon rainforest? We are seeking enthusiastic hardworking interns to join our spider- and howler monkey ecology project at Los Amigos Biological Station. This is your opportunity to contribute to the study and conservation of poorly known and endangered primates while becoming immersed in the breathtaking biodiversity of the Peruvian Amazon.
🐒 About the Site: Los Amigos Biological station is situated at 300m near the mouth of the Rio Los Amigos, a meandering wholly intact river that drains the eastern flank of the vast wilderness of Manu National Park and protects access to the territories of voluntarily isolated indigenous groups. The station grounds and the adjacent conservation concession cover 140,000 hectares of tropical rainforest. 12 species of primates are recorded from the site: LIST THEM
About the Project: We study the ecology of the black-faced spider monkey (Ateles chamek) and the Bolivian red howler monkeys (Alouatta sara) in both floodplain “varzea” and unflooded “terra firme” Amazonian forests at Los Amigos Biological Station. We focus on their impact on forest community ecology including nutrient spatial ecology, secondary seed dispersal associated with coprophagous beetles and impact on non-primate associates.

· Developing field biologist core skills including tracking movements with GPS, identifying feeding trees, collect fruit, seeds, and fecal samples, capture audio recordings, photograph individuals for identification purposes, install and maintain camera-traps
· Gaining Experience Using Tech Tools and Data Management: Learn about data processing and organization using Raven, BaseCamp, BirdNET, GIS software.
· Regular presentations on a variety of relevant research and conservation topics
· Having Impact. Make a meaningful contribution to primate conservation and ecological research
💰 Cost: $ 1500 per month, a one-month minimum stay, which covers:
- Orientation, Training and Supervision
- Food (3 meals a day + snacks for in the field) and Accommodation (clean, basic dorm rooms) at Los Amigos Biological Field Station
- Project materials and Equipment
🏋️♂️ Requirements:
· The position demands a high level of physical fitness. Most days we will spend several hours following primate species that can move surprisingly quickly through the forest at times. You should therefore be prepared for long walks in difficult tropical field conditions. This includes challenging weather (high temperatures, humidity and torrential rains), mud, and occasional encounters with stinging insects (wasps, ants, mosquitos).
· A sense of humor and adaptability.
· Travel Insurance with medical coverage
· A headlamp and flashlight, dry bag, and rainforest appropriate clothing including rubber wellington boots. Binoculars and camera are a plus, but not obligatory.
· Willingness to read and discuss scientific research papers on primatology and Amazonian ecology.
· Recognition that we have zero tolerance of sexual or other forms of harassment.
