Hello,

This RFC on Units of bytes has been approved by stakeholders and is now ready for rfc-editors@ to approve/reject the RFC.

P.S. If I could wish away the need for this RFC, I would. Since that is unreasonable, this RFC will improve the communication between our tools and developers by using consistent, clear terms. The suggestions presented don't reflect my personal taste (I prefer 1024 for KB, for example), but are a consensus of the reviewers and stakeholders. Please join me in considering the larger picture, where the benefits of having clear measures for units of bytes outweigh the detractors (like adding 'i' to KiB).

Summarizing the RFC:
  • All Fuchsia developer documentation and tools will present multiples of bytes in
    1024 units (i.e. powers of 2).
  • When describing bytes in abbreviated form, always use the "i" notation: KiB, MiB,
GiB, etc. The first and last letters are capitalized and the middle "i" is
    always lowercase.
  • Abbreviations KB, MB, GB (regardless of letter case) will not be used in
developer facing materials. Nor will kilobyte, megabyte, gigabyte be used.
For future readers, and people referencing the RFC, re-wording the summary to list these specific outcomes and decisions would help.

LGTM on my end, it seems like we have people from various areas supporting this, and that you've incorporated all the feedback given.

Adam, James, I'll let you weigh in.

Thanks Dave for this work.

LGTM.  I think jamesr is out, so we should probably move forward with the process without waiting for him to ack.

Pascal, do you want to do the honors?

Adam
