Car Help Needed

Hi everyone! 

Hoping someone on this listserv has expertise or experience selling/buying used cars. 

A friend currently has a used car that is a luxury model, which means it's very expensive to run and repair. She's hoping to trade it for something smaller and more efficient. KBB says it's worth around $1k and she'd be looking for something new that's in the range of $2k-ish. 

Does anyone have experience selling/buying cars at this level that could give us some pointers? Even suggestions for reputable dealerships to talk to or things to look out for when buying a new used car would be super helpful.
