Don't forget that Tuesday, February 23rd is the deadline for student members to apply for the travel scholarship for IAFP's 2016 Annual Meeting in St. Louis, Missouri to be held July 31st - August 3rd. All students are encouraged to apply.




Food Safety Attitudes Survey - US vs. UK

One of the previous interns in my lab group is collecting data on Food Safety Attitudes, Knowledge and Food Handling Practices: a Comparison between US and UK Students. The survey link is below if you would like to participate. You must be a US or UK student (those that have been out of school for less than a year are also qualified to take the survey).

The Department of Food Science & Technology http://oregonstate.edu/foodsci/position-opening-assistant-professorfood-safety-biologist at Oregon State University is seeking applications for an Assistant Professor – Food Safety Biologist.  This is a full-time (1.0FTE), 9-month fixed-term appointment: 60% Research, 30% Teaching, and 10% Service. The successful applicant will be expected to apply contemporary molecular, genomic, and bioinformatic approaches to increase the understanding of food safety issues relevant to food production, food processing, or public health in Oregon and the nation. This position will build upon the existing food safety teaching, research and outreach enterprise at Oregon State University. The successful candidate will train a new generation of scientific leaders grounded in modern biological approaches to solve food safety and related public health problems.  PhD degree in Food Science, Food Microbiology, Microbiology or related field is required by start date of  employment.  Candidates should also have successful teaching experience and demonstration of teaching effectiveness in food safety or food microbiology, evidence of strong communication skills, and a demonstrable commitment to promoting and enhancing diversity and inclusiveness is required.

The Department of Food Science & Technology http://oregonstate.edu/foodsci/position-opening-assistant-professorbrewing-micobiologist at Oregon State University is seeking applications for an Assistant Professor – Brewing Microbiologist.  This is a full-time (1.0FTE), 9-month fixed-term appointment: 60% Research, 30% Teaching, and 10% Service.  This position will complement the existing brewing science research and teaching programs at OSU by adding a microbiological skill set.  The successful applicant will be expected to build a brewing-related microbiological research program in areas such as brewing fermentation performance, brewing microbiology, genetics and/or biochemistry of alcoholic fermentation, biotransformations of flavor components, alternative/mixed fermentations, fermentation byproduct utilization, microbial aspects of sustainable food manufacturing, and downstream operations which enhance or control microbial processes to improve beer quality and manufacturing performance.  Teaching activities will be centered on how a fundamental microbiological approach can be leveraged in the brewing process to improve fermentation performance.  PhD degree in Food  Science, Food Microbiology or Microbiology, Microbial Genetics, Microbial Biochemistry, Biochemical Engineering, or related field by start date of employment.  Demonstrated capability to develop a pertinent research program which emphasizes the relationship of  microbiological principles to beer processing, finishing, and packaging.  Candidates should also have successful teaching experience and demonstration of teaching effectiveness in food microbiology or brewing microbiology.  Evidence of strong communication skills, and a demonstrable commitment to promoting and enhancing diversity and inclusiveness is required.

Chapman University Faculty Position Nutritional Pharmacology

Chapman University is seeking a faculty member to engage in innovative research at the interface of nutritional science, pharmacology, biochemistry, and food. The faculty member will have a joint appointment in the Schmid College of Science and Technology (Biochemistry & Molecular Biology and Food Science) and the School of Pharmacy, with the primary appointment being in SCST. The faculty member will have opportunity to collaborate on research and teaching initiatives with faculty across the breadth of disciplines represented by the two units. Research interests may include study of structure, properties, functionality, and bioavailability of food biomolecules, the effects of other ingredients, food matrices and processing on functionality, the pharmacology of functional food ingredients, metabolomics, and the biochemical mechanisms by which food and food components impact health. Preference would be given to candidates whose projects can integrate with our pharmacy, biochemistry, molecular biology, food science and clinical faculty focusing on improving health and chronic disease prevention. The ideal candidate will have a Ph.D. in nutritional science, biochemistry, nutritional pharmacology, or food science or related field with demonstrated excellence in teaching. Teaching responsibilities will include graduate courses in nutritional pharmacology and functional foods, and undergraduate courses in nutritional biochemistry and medicinal chemistry. The ability to direct undergraduate and graduate student research is required.
