Dear all,

As some of you know, since the contribution of Legend (October 2020), FINOS have provided a Legend Shared instance that is available, free of charge, to all our FINOS Members and contributors, enabling our hosted projects to build and test data models in a collaborative fashion (more info on www.finos.org/legend); right now we have a little more than 200 end users signed up on this platform, hosting 6 data modeling initiatives.

This environment has proven an amazing level of stability in the last years (above 99.9% uptime), thanks to the collaboration of FINOS and the Legend team, however proving to be hard to upgrade, causing the instance to stay behind the latest and greatest Legend versions.

For this reason, we decided to work on a deployment mechanism, with a strong focus on stability, flexibility and automation, which is now ready for prime time and available at https://github.com/finos/legend-juju-bundle (and sibling repositories); this solution makes use of Juju, an open source orchestration engine for software operators that enables the deployment, integration and lifecycle management of applications, built in the open by Canonical.

If you visit https://legend.finos.org/studio you should expect to use the latest and greatest Legend released version (currently using September 1st release).

If you are an active user of the FINOS Legend Shared instance, you can shortly rely on a more updated environment; if you have Legend deployed behind your corporate firewall (or you’re planning to), you may want to checkout the Legend Juju bundle as a deployment (and day-2 operations) strategy.

A big shout out to Cloudbase for providing technical support to develop the Legend Juju bundle in the open and advise the FINOS team on how to provision and manage the shared environment.

For any questions or concerns, please contact he...@finos.org and we’d be happy to help.

Thank you!
