[FINOS Community] backstage.io and developer scaffolding implementations

I’ve noticed that a lot of companies are implementing backstage.io as part of an overall developer experience / dev scaffolding effort. It seems to be an emerging standard. I was wondering if there would be enough interest from other members to form a SIG on this subject? Or perhaps this falls under the purview of an existing SIG? Seems like there’s a lot we could learn from each other in financial services on this topic.

The Nomura team would be interested in joining this conversation. We are also investing in Backstage as a next-gen developer experience platform and have given developer experience considerable focus over the last couple of years.

 

Are you suggesting that we should establish a FINOS Developer Experience SIG to cover all of the aspects of this space?

 

Being a relatively new member, I don’t know if there is already a SIG for this, but I would think that developer experience is a big enough concern to warrant its own forum.

 

Thank you for the suggestion. I hope we get an opportunity to collaborate on this soon.

Thanks for bringing this up John. Backstage is super interesting and IMHO it fits perfectly into the InnerSource SIG as Backstage is purpose built for running inside organizations and improving collaboration, i.e. InnerSource. Let me know what you think :)

For reference, Suzanne Daniels (DevRel lead at Backstage.io) gave a great talk at LF Summit in Dublin. Interestingly, Backstage itself is a product of InnerSource at Spotify that they subsequently open sourced.

 

Following from Arthur’s suggestion - as a starting point, we could absolutely facilitate a session on Backstage as part of the InnerSource SIG. It might be interesting to invite Suzanne to also participate.

 

If that is of interest, we could schedule that as the topic for the Nov InnerSource SIG community call and perhaps next steps for working together on the topic could be fleshed out there? Let us know!

A discussion on Backstage is on the agenda for the next DevOps SIG meeting on Oct 20 (https://github.com/finos/devops-mutualization/issues/63); this topic is aligned with one of key themes for the SIG – how are banks orchestrating self-service workflows for developers.

The SIG would be a good forum to exchange ideas and discuss contribution opportunities wrt Backstage. Looking forward to hearing from the community.

I would welcome that. Given that there are 2 SIGs where this is probably relevant, should we have a combined session, or do we think that each SIG will have its own points of emphasis and discussion points?

 

I’m open to suggestions, but I would vote for 2 sessions: the devops mutualization forum can get into a technical discussion around automated compliance and the developer experience, as well as the tools and platforms that we can or should standardize on, and the innersource discussion can be about repeatable patterns and the intersections between developer experience and innersource programs. But if there are strong opinions that those are functionally discussions about the same thing, I’m happy to support a joint discussion.
