It has been exactly two years since the Architecture as Code Working Group formed under the DevOps Automation SIG with the aim of figuring out how we could make architecture an integral, concrete part of the SDLC. Our intent was to get architecture off whiteboards and out of Visio diagrams and make it something that we could use to drive developer productivity, lower friction in the development cycle and reduce risk through enabling measurable controls.

In January 2024 the first draft of CALM, the Common Architecture Language Model, was published. Many more have followed along with a rich and growing ecosystem of tools to make it easier to work with CALM and to enable organisations to embed CALM into their existing development pipelines, including CALM Hub for managing CALM artefacts and the most recent addition our VS Code Plugin in Developer Preview.

CALM is already in use in several firms, where it is being used to document architectures of existing systems, enable pattern based automated security approvals and has already underpinned well in excess of 2000 application deployments.

Today, I am delighted to announce the formal release of v1.0 of the CALM Schema and CLI (@finos/calm-cli on npm). I would like to give a huge, heartfelt thanks to all of our contributors, whether you have submitted a PR, raised an issue or shared your ideas and expertise on our regular collaborator calls. Thank you to all of you for getting us here.

However, we’re only just getting started, come and get involved:

  • Take a look at our GitHub Repo and give it a star!
  • Join our monthly meetup or weekly office hours for active contributors.
  • Contribute reference architectures and controls (exciting things to come in this space as we start working with our friends and partners in Common Cloud Controls and the AI Governance Framework).
  • Talk to us for advice on how to integrate CALM into your own developer tooling.

See you all at OSFF in New York!
