Dear Working Group 2 members,

Please find attached a document on marine seismology data/metadata standards, based on the work of WG5’s Action Committee on Marine seismology data
from 2023-2025, and discussed with WGs 2 and 5 during the 2025 Lisbon FDSN Meeting.

Section 2 contains specific requests for changes to FDSN standards or documentation:
  • Section 2.1: Additions to “Source Identifiers” documentation,  for Seismometer channel subsource codes
  • Section 2.2: New StationXML elements:
    • 2.2.1: <ClockDrift>
    • 2.2.2: <Leveler>
  • Section 2.3:  Additions to “miniSEED” documentation, for clock drift correction, unmeasured clock drift where significant drift is expected, and leap-second corrections.

We hope that you find these requested changes pertinent and implementable.  If you judge any of them to be inappropriate for official standards or documentation, please tell us.

Best regards
The FDSN Working Group 5 Action Group on marine seismology standards

Dear Philipp,

Our idea was to integrate them into the next version of StationXML, without resorting to another namespace.  In section 3.2.2 of the document, we propose a way to put these (and other) proposed elements into current stationXML documents, using JSON coding within Comment elements.  That said, an interim solution of a separate namespace in stationXML 1.2 might allow simpler software solutions that would work with both the current and new versions: I would defer to stationXML experts on which is preferable.

Regards
Wayne

Dear Wayne, all,

Do you popose to add these XML elements to a new version (e.g. 1.3) of stationXML by defining them in the stationXML's XSD, or shall they be defined in their own namespace and added to current stationXML 1.2 documents?

Thanks, and best regards
Philipp
