Local School Councils (LSCs) help shape the future of our schools—and right now, they need people to step up. Whether you’re a parent, student, community member, or school staff, you can make a real impact by joining your school’s LSC.
LSC members take part in key decisions, like: • Approving the school’s academic plan • Deciding how school funds are used • Evaluating and selecting principals
But here’s the problem: when LSC seats go unfilled, it can stall progress and limit what the council can get done. Schools function better when their councils are fully staffed and ready to lead—so if you care about your local school, now’s the time to get involved.
How to Join a Local School Council (LSC) in 5 Manageable Steps 1. Check if You’re Eligible-->Here Parents, community members, students, and school staff can all apply—just make sure you meet the criteria for your role.
2. Find an Open Seat--> Here Use the [LSC Members Map] to locate open seats at your child’s school or in your community. You’ll need to live in a school’s boundary zone to apply as a community member—or have a kid at the school if applying as a parent.
3. Submit Your Nomination Packet--> Here Fill out the required forms (Nomination, Disclosure, etc.) and bring two forms of ID. Submit hard copies to the school principal and email digital copies to lscrel...@cps.edu.
4. Attend an LSC Meeting Show up, speak during public comment, and let them know you want to fill a seat. Confirm meeting dates/times with the school or use the LSC Map.
5. Wait for the Vote At the next meeting (you don’t have to attend), the LSC votes. If you get a majority, congrats—you’re now an official member, voting rights and all. |
