Each year, our dedicated Parent Mentors take the lead in planning and executing powerful, community-centered events at their schools. These events aren’t just activities—they're expressions of the mentors’ commitment to their school communities and a direct response to needs they see and experience firsthand. With support from their Parent Mentor Coordinator, these incredible parents pool their creativity, energy, and resources to bring their vision to life. The results are meaningful events that build stronger connections between families, educators, and students—reminding us all that learning doesn’t stop at the classroom door. We’re proud to share a few highlights from this year's Beyond the Classroom events at Marcus Garvey, Esmond, and Mt. Vernon Elementary Schools. Take a look at the impact of parent power in action!

Literacy Day at Marcus Garvey
At Marcus Garvey, Parent Mentors led a powerful Literacy Day where students wrote and read their own books, sharing their stories with pride. Families and school staff were invited to witness this celebration of creativity and achievement, reinforcing the critical role parents play in their children's academic journey. The event was a joyful reminder that when parents show up, students shine.

Teen Dating Violence at Esmond
In partnership with the WINGS organization, Parent Mentors at Esmond organized a vital workshop for 5th–8th grade students on recognizing and preventing teen dating violence. The session empowered students with knowledge about healthy relationships and the warning signs of emotional and physical abuse. By sparking these critical conversations early, our mentors are helping shape safer, more informed futures.

Community First Aid at Mt Vernon
Mt. Vernon’s Parent Mentors hosted a Community First Aid Training where parents received hands-on instruction from a local firefighter on CPR, Narcan use, choking response, and tourniquet application. Participants left with life-saving skills—and free smoke and carbon monoxide detectors to protect their homes. This event was a powerful example of how parents are not only learning for themselves, but leading safety initiatives that benefit the whole community.
