Track foundation drilling equipment delivery and assembly: Spring 2026
Red Line Extension Project: Construction Update
Track foundation drilling equipment delivery and assembly: Spring 2026

Construction is here! This spring, CTA’s Red Line Extension Project contractor, Walsh-VINCI, will begin drilling foundations for the new elevated tracks in your community. Here’s what you need to know:

✴️Where: Starting at E. 117th and S. Calumet and moving north

What: Contractor Walsh-VINCI will deliver and assemble a construction drill rig

Why: The equipment will drill deep holes in the ground where the new track foundations will be poured, followed by new columns and the new elevated track bridge

When: Site prep work and delivery of the drill rig components will begin the week of March 30, 2026*

Start of track foundation drilling (Near 354 E. 118th Street)
Drill Rig
To drill new track foundations for the elevated Red Line Extension, the contractor will use a drill rig to bore holes that can be 80 to 100 feet deep. The drilling is followed by new track column construction and then building the new track bridge.
*Construction schedules are subject to change.
How will this affect the community?
There will be truck traffic and noise. Work will be performed during the daytime hours.

Will anything be done to minimize the impacts of this work?
Yes. CTA and the contractor are committed to minimizing impacts and keeping the public and employees safe throughout construction. Some of those efforts include building “haul roads” inside the construction area to allow the contractor to safely transport materials and equipment to the job site; dust mitigation using water hoses; and street cleaning of construction debris and mud. Construction fencing will enclose the work area to protect the public.

How long will this work last?
At this location, the mobilization of the drill rig and drilling the first foundation are expected to take about one to two weeks. Crews will move north as they complete drilling.

If I have more questions, who can I talk to?
To build the Red Line Extension to 130th Street, work will be performed that may affect your community. While progress sometimes comes with inconveniences, we will do our best to keep them to a minimum.
