UI project: error messages

Since several people in today's meeting mentioned error messages and on-screen notifications as priorities, we are going to make this one of the UI group's first projects.

Jason and Andrea and I will look into the code and see why the existing long descriptions are not being displayed; we may be able to fix that fairly quickly.
