ART CENTER OF ESTES PARK

NEWSLETTER

APRIL 2025 EDITION

MESSAGE FROM THE BOARD PRESIDENT

" A photograph is a secret about a secret. The more you it tells you the less you know".

Diane Arbus

With this edition of our monthly newsletter, our returning Gallery Manager, Lars Sage, is resuming his “first of the month” schedule.  Since it so closely follows the mid-March edition, I’ll be brief!

I want to tell you a little about the captivating new Featured Artist Show that recently opened in our Gallery. Long time local resident and fire chief of 20 years, Scott Dorman’s presentation “Capturing Paradise – At Home and Away” is a sensational display of his talent. Scott’s choice of settings for the dynamic photos he creates are the Big Island of Hawaii and Estes Park, Colorado. (And I mustn’t leave out the skies above... in his wondrous shot of the Milky Way.)

As you enter Scott’s world and walk from photograph to photograph, you’ll experience the intense drama of lava flows spewing fire into the night and the tranquility of mountain lakes; the brilliance of an evening sunset and the powerful energy of a Canada goose lifting off from the water amidst furious splashes; wildlife and the wild wonders of our world.

This is a show you’ll definitely want to see.

Stay well and stay creative!

Diana

COMMENTS FROM THE GALLERY MANAGER

Collaboration is the process of two or more people, entities or organizations working together to complete a task or achieve a goal. Collaboration is similar to cooperation, alliance, partnership, participation, association, concert, teamwork, joint effort, working together. The essential goal is to ensure that team members understand how it will help them work together more efficiently and achieve their objectives.

There are a few areas of activities that represent this concept. The Art Center Board of Directors developed a letter of support for the Fine Arts Guild's proposal to build an arts complex as they negotiate with the Board of Trustees to lease the land at the Stanley Fairgrounds to build this facility, which will benefit the major performing and visual arts in our community. A collaborative effort.

Another area involves the Estes Arts District's processing an application to Colorado Creative Industries to gain recognition as a Creative Arts District. EAD is an umbrella organization, a collaborative effort for all the performing and visual arts in Estes Park. I am a member of the Board representing the Art Center and supporting the effort to achieve this goal. If successful, this would open a number of doors for funds and opportunities to further support and enhance the arts in this town.

There is also the proposed Film Institute at the Stanley Hotel. Another part of the arts being developed with the "dream" of making Estes Park an arts destination. In addition, there is the recent news that the famed Sundance Film Festival will be relocated to Boulder in 2027, which will have an impact for Estes. The Stanley Hotel will again host a Director's and a Producer's workshops in connection with Sundance.

A greater sense of collaboration is continuing to be organized in order to support and promote these activities that will benefit the arts community as a whole. I am pleased and proud that the Art Center has taken an active role in these efforts. A few steps have been taken and more lie ahead to further these collaborative beginnings.

Beginning Zentangle©: Let’s Do Color!

with Deb Coombs

Art Center Members:  $36.00       Non-Members:  $40.00

In this third in a series of beginning Zentangle® classes, we will once again be drawing on a round Zendala tile. We will learn the techniques of laying down watercolors with analagous or complimentary colors, adding Zentangles on top of the watercolor and then using more watercolors to shade our design along with a graphite pencil. We will also use a white charcoal pencil to add highlights.

No need to have taken the first class. No need to be able to draw - if you can write your name, you can Zentangle®! Come experience the joy of Zentangling and its unique meditative and mindful practice. Deb Coombs is a Certified Zentangle® Teacher (CZT), long-time member of the Art Center and long-time resident of Estes Park.

Materials Provided by Teacher as part of Class Fee:

Deb will provide 2 white Zendala tiles, graphite pencil, white charcoal pencil, micron pen, 2 tortillions,  marcus operandus, handout with step outs- all part of the class fee.

Students Will Provide:

Students will provide their own watercolor set, brush, container for water and a ruler or something similar with at least a 6” straight edge. (See Materials/Supply Handout for details regarding suggested types of watercolor supplies to bring and where you might be able to purchase them.)

If desired, a few students may purchase a watercolor set and brushes from the instructor for $8.00 on the day of class as follows:

Deb will have a few watercolor sets, with brushes, on hand and available for purchase. ($8 payable directly to her on class day.)

Note: Your best bet is to email her in advance to have a set reserved at dcgn...@gmail.com These sets are not high-end by any means, but it is the set that was used to paint the sample tiles and they turned out well.
