Mayor Hall,
I had to leave today's meeting a bit early so I wasn't able to ask the questions I had in mind.
  • Can you please share an update on EPPD relocation and a gut shot of when we might see ground breaking?
  • Some of the conversation today centered around "big ideas" that you/we don't have significant control over from my perspective.  Would you mind sharing your evaluation on a scale of 1 to 10 with 10 being  the highest rating, of whether the Larimer County and CO State govt's successfully reflect or are aligned with the priorities of Estes Park. Maybe sharing some examples of the good, the bad, and the ugly would be helpful.  Thank you.

Lee, thanks. Shopping for sites has continued. Right now it's beginning to look like there's good possibilities with the Fairgrounds/Rodeo Grounds area. Some things have occurred that are beginning to make this look like a good spot, though there are a variety of factors that would have to occur to make it to the finish line. I'd guess that we might be two years from groundbreaking, though it would be lovely to be sooner, much sooner, and that is just my mayoral total guess based on knowing how long things take. Could be three years out for groundbreaking.

Interesting question on alignment. Yes, I think generally there's good concurrence, though a lot of that has to do with the current set of county commissioners, the current governor, and the current legislature. All of that, of course, can change with upcoming election cycles. I'd say that on issues like health care (including Medicaid), insurance, transportation, environment/resource sustainability, things like that, we're probably an 8 or more. Some things can be more divisive, like water rights and things like that, but even then, I think there's a high congruence of direction at those partisan bodies with our nonpartisan government here, and with our Town strategic plan. Probably no worse than a 6 or 7 on most issues. Does that help?

Yes.  Don’t mean to monopolize your time but can you hone in on the public safety aspect.  I’m particularly interested in that as an EPPD auxiliary volunteer.  Our PD does a fine job, evidenced once again by Sarah’s comments at your gathering.  We need to make sure they have the tools including access to information to do their job.  Do you believe the gun control laws, laws relating to public information, and laws that impact the ability of public/govt. entities to share information with law enforcement make Estes Park safer or are more partisan in nature designed to “tow the party line”?  In order for EP to survive and thrive we need to remain a safe environment for our residents and vacationers.  As much as we’d like to better control the tremendous summer migration to our town, for now “it is what it is”.  Tourism is our lifeblood.  Any significant escalation in crime and the associated negative publicity we and/or RMNP receives  can and likely will over time have a devastating impact on the community.  Thank you for listening.

My time is for you and all to use.

Of course, my position is nonpartisan. Of course, I have personal opinions. I do believe that most gun control legislation operates along party lines, and that many politicians "toe the line" to placate their party leaders and further their political careers. I do think there needs to be additional legislation to balance 2nd amendment rights with safety, and I do emphasize that safety is the primary part of that equation.

This is one man's opinion, not reflective of a Town stance or the Town board. Does that get closer to clarity?

Yes on the gun control question.  Rather than continuing with email I’d like to stop in and visit with you maybe next week if you are available.  Do I need an appointment or are there days when you have an open door to your office?  It should only take maybe 5-10 minutes.  Thank you.

Appointments are better. I am in the office Mon - Wed, then out for a few days. Though I have several looking to book time in the open slots listed here, grab it when you can. I have time 1:30 - 3:30 Monday, early Tuesday before 10, Wednesday 10 - 11 or 2 - 5.
