Project Update
Starting on Friday, February 13, the Colorado Department of Transportation with contractor, Dillie and Kuhn, will be working at the intersection of Colorado Highway 66 and Main Street/US Highway 287 in Longmont. Operations include potholing and boring for conduit, which will be done in phases working east to west.
Monday, February 16 and Tuesday, February 17 crews will conduct night work from 6 p.m. to 7 a.m. for potholing. The phasing and impacts to the traveling public for the intersection improvements are as follows (also see map below for more details):
Daytime Work (Phases 1, 2, 5 and 6) February 13, 18, 19 and 20
Impacts
- Phase 1: Westbound CO 66 right lane closure
- Phase 2: Northbound right turn-lane closure onto US 287 from westbound CO 66
- Phase 5: Westbound CO 66 right lane closure
- Phase 6: Southbound right turn-lane closure onto westbound CO 66 from US 287
Nighttime Work (Phases 3A, 3B and 4) February 16 and 17
Impacts
- Phase 3A (work on NB lane only): Northbound US 287 right lane closure (both side of the intersection) and northbound right turn-lane closure from CO 66 onto US 287
- Phase 3B (work on SB turn-lane only): Southbound left turn-lane closure from US 287 onto CO 66
- Phase 4: Southbound US 287 right lane closure (just north of the intersection) and westbound CO 66 right lane closure
Please visit http://COTrip.org for real-time impacts on this project and others across the state. It's also an excellent resource for gauging road conditions (via CDOT's highway cameras) and possible closures due to changing winter weather.
About the Project
The project consists of bringing fiber optic cable to CO 66 and traffic cameras to US 36. Fiber optic cable will be installed from I-25 to Lyons offering support for the US 36 traffic cameras. Once it is completed, crews will move to US 36 with the introduction of traffic cameras.
Benefits of fiber optic:
- Expands internet access to communities
- Offers support for traffic cameras
- Manages traffic equipment and technologies
- Improves emergency service communications
Benefits of traffic cameras:
- Helps to get first responders to the scene faster since they are monitored by CDOT Operation Centers 24 hours a day
- Assists the public and snowplows in understanding road conditions before going out
- Keeps an eye on a challenging canyon corridor, which has a history of flood, fire, heavy snow and strong winds
- Assists authorities in managing traffic flow in real time
- Encourages safer driving behavior with visible cameras
- Collects data for future planning
