Welcome to the weekend.

One of my favorite lines from the British period drama “Downton Abbey” was delivered by Maggie Smith, in her role as Violet Crawley, the Dowager Countess of Grantham, when she heard the word “weekend” and asked  quizzically, “What is a weekend?”

Indeed, what is a weekend?

For many, it is a time to catch up on sleep, reading, or housework. Perhaps it is time for a stolen hour at Macdonald Book Shop, a cup of coffee along the River Walk, a dinner party with friends, or a glass of wine on the deck. Visitors come for day trips to Town, and Estes Park locals often step back from the crowds but selectively take in favorite offerings.

As next weekend starts, I plan to see the new film “Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale,” which will be released on Sept. 12.

Over the past 15 years, I have enjoyed the television show and two other movies that chronicle the upstairs and downstairs lives of the people who live at the fictional Yorkshire country estate. Set in 1930, this farewell film deals with the economic and social changes after World War I and the onset of the Great Depression 95 years ago.

The Historic Park Theater is planning some Downton Abbey fun, and I hear there are some special giveaways in the works.

Happy weekend --PB
