3)  INFO Session with Popular Environmental Field Studies Program, Wildlands Studies.
- Thursday, Oct 16th at 5pm in Bren 4016 (ES Seminar Room)

Wildlands Studies international environmental field programs provide students the opportunity to gain hands-on field experience. Students study a wide variety of topics, including ecology, environmental policy, geology, climate change, habitat conservation, and the relationships between environments and culture. Most participants are undergraduates who join us on-site from all over North America. Students can earn 15 units of upper-division credit provided through Western Washington University! Scholarships can apply towards funding our programs. Program teams consist of around 10-16 participants working with a PhD or professional researcher. Students can choose different wildlife, wildland, and cultural ecology field study locations that are all searching for solutions to environmental challenges.

Current field studies occur in Australia, Belize, Chile, Ecuador, French Polynesia, Iceland, Indonesia, Japan, Nepal, New Zealand, Thailand, Alaska, and Yellowstone.

Information on all of our programs is available on our website: www.wildlandsstudies.com.

Please join our Student Information Session on Thursday, October 16 at 5PM in Bren 4016, ES Seminar Room to learn more! We also host Zoom Info Sessions every Wednesday at 5pm PT.   Hope to see you there!

6)  Santa Barbara Surfrider General Meeting: Featuring Reuven Bank, Sunflower Star Laboratory – “Restoring the critically endangered Sunflower Star and saving California’s kelp forests.”
— October 16th, 7:00 PM, Watershed Resource Center at Arroyo Burro Beach State Park (AKA Hendry’s Beach)

In 2013–14, one of the largest marine disease outbreaks on record decimated sea star populations along the West Coast — turning over six billion Sunflower Stars into goo and rendering them functionally extinct in California. Because of the loss of this keystone urchin predator, more than 96% of Northern California’s kelp forests have vanished in the past decade — with similar declines happening right here in our ocean backyard, around Santa Rosa and San Miguel Islands.

Meet the Sunflower Star Laboratory (SSL)
SSL is a conservation aquaculture nonprofit dedicated to restoring the critically endangered Sunflower Star and saving California’s kelp forests.
Formed in 2021 by community members who witnessed the collapse of local kelp forests, SSL is now:

- Raising the first cohort of human-reared juvenile Sunflower Stars in California

- Conducting groundbreaking research on Sunflower Star recovery

- Collaborating with institutions across North America to rebuild healthy kelp ecosystems

Presentation by Reuven Bank, Board Chair, Sunflower Star Laboratory

Join us to learn about SSL’s inspiring work and how our coastal community can play a role in restoring balance to California’s ocean ecosystems.

7)  Volunteer Opportunity: San Jose Creek Clean-Up – Saturday, October 18th

Another creek cleanup with the Environmental Defense Center (EDC). This event will be at San Jose Creek, and I’d love to share the opportunity with Environmental Studies students.

San Jose Creek Clean-Up
Date: Saturday, October 18, 2025
Time: 9:00 AM – 11:30 AM
Location: Meet at the Berkeley Footbridge on Berkeley Road

Litter washing off streets through storm drains into San Jose Creek is a serious threat to wildlife in the creek, the Goleta Slough, and the Pacific Ocean. By volunteering, students can make a direct impact on protecting our local environment.

I’ve attached the event flier below with all the details. If you’d be willing to share this with students, I’d really appreciate it!
